On Monday, January 19, 2026 - Overbrook Environmental Education Center celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the to empower visitors (young and old) to use their voices, creativity, and curiosity to make a difference.

The OEEC engaged our young scholars in hands-on sorting of people, animal, and plant life to eventually determine that living things need clean air, water, and soil to live and thrive. Our young scholars also pledged not to litter so that all people, creatures, and plants can benefit from the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic, and esthetic values of the environment.

Yesterday Overbrook Environmental Education Center welcomed our friends from the community back in for another Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative (AUNI) Healthy Cooking Class, led by the wonderful Angie from UPenn’s Netter Center for Community Partnerships (). Guests learned how to cook a tasty Chicken Noodle Soup recipe, as well as about the role of a balanced diet in promoting digestive health and wellness.

Next week (Wednesday, January 28 at 10:30am), join us again to learn how to cook Cheddar Broccoli Soup! These classes are free, fun, and open to everyone.

🍂 Philly Leaf Recycling is back!
For next couple of weeks, the Department of Sanitation is collecting fallen leaves for composting, which helps in reducing landfill waste and creating free mulch and compost for residents through the Fairmount Park Organic Recycling Center.

✔️ Curbside leaf pickup in select neighborhoods (swipe for dates).
✔️ Bagged leaf drop-off events on Nov 8, Nov 22, Dec 6, Dec 13 & Dec 20 at locations across the city.
✔️ Bagged leaves can also be taken to Sanitation Convenience Centers.

Reminder: Leaves placed out with regular trash won’t be composted, so use drop-off options if you want them recycled.

Swipe for schedules, locations, and how to participate 🍁✨

On October 29, 2025, Overbrook Environmental Education Center (OEEC) hosted the first Tree Care and Maintenance Training of the Fall 2025 season in partnership with the PHL Commerce Department’s Taking Care of Business (TCB) – Commercial Corridor Tree Partnership Program.

Staff members from ACANA, Achievability, Centennial Parkside CDC, Esperanza, and HACE came together to learn hands-on techniques in pruning, watering, fencing, and safety — all essential to caring for trees along Philadelphia’s commercial corridors.

This innovative workforce development initiative equips TCB Ambassadors with valuable green skills that strengthen both their professional growth and the neighborhoods they serve.

Special thanks to our instructors Vanessa Wimberly (OEEC), Marissa Donohue (Commerce Department), and Brian English (Green City Works) for leading the first of five fall training sessions.
