Gabrielle is a bright and athletic teen who serves as captain of her school's varsity cheerleading team is track and field athlete. Diagnosed with scoliosis as a child, it wasn't until her freshman year of high school when she came to Shriners Children's Philadelphia for an appointment with Dr. Samdani. After a successful spinal fusion surgery, Gabrielle is back to doing what she loves.

Today, Gabrielle is a senior in high school and was recognized through the Spectrum News 1 North Carolina High School Scholars program for excelling in the classroom and community, while balancing sports, school, and scoliosis.

Chief of Staff, Amer F. Samdani, recently participated in The Fourth Annual Temple Spine Symposium hosted across the street at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine. It was planned by Dr. Pazionis, of Temple Health. The discussions covered a wide range of topics of spine surgery.

After a blood test, it was determined that both Jeffrey and his mother, Theresa, have the condition spinocerebellar ataxia type 29 (SCA29). Every person living with SCA29 is affected differently. For Jeffrey, he has hypotonia, hypertonia, ADHD, ataxic dysarthria, scoliosis and an intellectual disability. For Theresa, she had scoliosis as a child, didn’t walk independently until she was 7 years old, and now in adulthood deals with her legs and vocal cords tiring towards the end of the day.

For Spirit of Children, Halloween is all year round 💜 Over the last 18 years, Spirit of Children has raised funds to support the child life departments in over 14 Shriners Children's locations.

This year, Shriners Children’s Philadelphia received a donation of $66,927, which helps child life staff acquire the best tools, education and training needed. We're so thankful for their support.
