The biggest fans of our patients are their doctors! 😊

Aubree is a sprint car driver who received elbow surgery at performed by Dr. Park. As a gift of thanks she gave him a signed racing photo of herself. It reads, "Thank you Shriners for fixing my elbow so I can race again." Dr. Park was very appreciative of the token of thanks!

Meet Piper, a resilient scoliosis patient who was able to return to the sport she loves after spinal fusion surgery. Read more about her story from her mom, Zoe, below.

"15 yr old Piper is a 5x National Champion cheerleader. Despite full-time bracing through middle school, her scoliosis continued to progress. When her curves reached surgical range she worried that tumbling and stunting would no longer be possible with a fused spine. As a family we decided to travel from Texas for the research based approach and superior skill that Shriners Philly has to offer.
Piper underwent posterior spinal fusion with Dr Pahys just 6 months ago and has already been hitting the mat. She’s regained most of her skills, stunted in a pep rally at 3 months post op and even made All-American Cheerleader this summer!"

August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month, so we are highlighting our strong and loving patient Erica. Erica is a 10-year-old upbeat, fiercely positive, caring friend and patient. If you missed it, check out the video she edited on our page. She made intentional choices in her editing to support her friends, such as making the text color pink because it was her friend and fellow patient's favorite color. With every choice she makes, she thinks how others will be affected, and she is such a bright light in and out of our hospital walls. She lives everyday with spinal muscular atrophy, causing scoliosis. She recently had successful spinal fusion surgery at .

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a group of different muscle diseases that cause a defective or missing "survivor neuron gene." This gene makes your body produce a protein that feeds neurons in the spinal cord. Without this protein, neurons break down and eventually stop functioning. This affects a child’s ability to walk, crawl, breathe, swallow and control their head and neck.

Everyone who meets Erica is better than they were before meeting her. 💖

Brooks is a patient at who underwent spinal fusion surgery, and now wears a custom scoliosis brace for most of the day. He was gifted a Higgy Bear, a teddy bear rocking a back brace just like him! Thank you Higgy Bears! 🧸

It wouldn't be Brooks without a silly photo, swipe for a laugh! 😊➡️
