Elizabeth Brown Counseling

Elizabeth Brown Counseling Elizabeth Brown Counseling is locally-owned and operated in South Philadelphia, PA. She was nervous, distraught, exhausted.

Since opening in 2016, we’ve partnered with our clients as they have walked through their unique life experiences in an effort to find hope and healing. While living in a ski town in Colorado, attending a church, being involved as a youth group leader, and participating in Bible studies and small groups, people kept approaching me to talk over coffee. One conversation in particular was the precipitous event that led my decision to pursue a master's in counseling psychology. Sitting across the table, I, a single, childless, twenty-something woman, listened to a married mother of a teenager telling me about the strifes of marriage and parenthood while searching for her identity in all of that. She sipped her coffee, looked up at me and asked with fearful eyes, “So do you think it would be better for my daughter if I stay with my husband or if I leave him?” I slouched down in my chair, feeling equally at a loss with her while knowing that I possessed just a mere glimpse of the hopeless feelings this woman was experiencing. I spouted out a vague response and left her with the name of a marriage counselor I knew in our town. We finished our drinks and parted ways - she, fearful yet optimistic; me, confused at why she, along with so many other people in our church and community, were coming to a young single woman (who still felt like such a girl) about their marital and family issues. I left the cafe frustrated that I couldn’t actually help beyond simply being present and loving this woman through her struggles. I left that conversation determined to become equipped to effectively help the people in my community. Six years later, post master’s degree in professional counseling, and through confusing, stretching, funny, messy and graceful experiences in educational, church, personal, and professional life, I’m left with the confidence and privilege to walk with individuals and families through their strifes, struggles, joys, confusions, and the growth that is all-encompassing in this life. Today, living in a city that is quite different than a ski town in Colorado, my bicycle is my primary source of transportation, I engage in thoughtful conversations with friends and many strangers, am involved in several groups - bible studies, topical discussions, and am an active advocate for equality of all people, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, country of origin, income level, and socioeconomic status. I cook a lot, write a lot, am generally smiling genuinely, find many things to be hilarious enough to laugh out loud about, and I spend more time than most watching nature and life moving about around me. Spend just two minutes looking out a window to see how many birds fly, stop, do stuff, fly, stop, do stuff, and if you find it both calming and funny you’ll gain an understanding of my perception of the world.

"If you find yourself having to regularly indulge in consumer self-care, it’s because you are disconnected from actual self-care, which has very little to do with 'treating yourself' and a whole lot do with parenting yourself and making choices for your long-term wellness."
