Sleep apnea affects much more than just sleep—it can also be closely connected to heart rhythm disorders like atrial fibrillation (AF).
A multicenter clinical study evaluated whether the WatchPAT home sleep apnea test could detect potential arrhythmias while patients were being tested for sleep-disordered breathing.
Researchers studied 84 patients across 11 sleep centers worldwide who completed both WatchPAT testing and a full in-lab sleep study (polysomnography with ECG monitoring).
The findings were impressive:
• The WatchPAT algorithm detected atrial fibrillation segments with 77% sensitivity and 99% specificity
• Detection of premature heart beats closely matched lab sleep study results, with a correlation of 0.98 (p < 0.001)
This means that during a sleep apnea test, WatchPAT may also flag possible heart rhythm irregularities that warrant further medical evaluation.
Why this matters:
Sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation are strongly connected. Studies estimate that 49–62% of patients with AF also have sleep apnea, and untreated sleep apnea can increase the likelihood of AF recurrence after treatment.
While WatchPAT does not replace ECG or cardiac monitoring, it can provide valuable information that helps physicians identify patients who may need further cardiac evaluation.
For patients experiencing snoring, fatigue, teeth grinding, or poor sleep, a simple at-home sleep test can be the first step toward better sleep—and potentially uncover other important health insights.

GLP-1 medications are becoming more common in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and obesity, but many people don’t realize they can also impact oral health.
The American Diabetes Association highlights the connection between diabetes and periodontal disease. Treating gum disease can actually help improve blood sugar control, which is why dental care is an important part of overall diabetes management.
If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, be sure to keep up with your dental visits and let your dentist know about any medications you’re using. And remember—these medications should always be prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.

💉🦷 On Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound? Here’s how to protect your teeth while on GLP-1 medications.
These medications have helped many patients lose weight and improve their health, but they can also come with side effects like dry mouth, reflux, vomiting, and rapid weight loss — all of which may increase risk for cavities, enamel wear, and facial volume changes.
There’s still limited long-term research on how GLP-1s affect oral health, so the best approach right now is prevention and close monitoring.
Here’s the protocol I recommend to my patients:
✅ 1. Tell your dentist
Always let us know if you’re taking a GLP-1 medication so we can watch for early signs of dry mouth, decay, or acid erosion.
✅ 2. Come in more often
Consider cleanings every 3–4 months while on the medication. Catching problems early is easier, cheaper, and less invasive.
✅ 3. Fight dry mouth aggressively
Drink water frequently, use dry-mouth rinses (like Biotene or ACT Dry Mouth), chew sugar-free xylitol gum, and avoid alcohol-based mouthwash.
✅ 4. Protect against acid
If you vomit or have reflux, don’t brush right away. Rinse with water or fluoride rinse and wait ~30 minutes before brushing. Let us know if symptoms are frequent so we can add extra protection.
✅ 5. Upgrade your home routine
Daily flossing, fluoride toothpaste twice a day, and in some cases prescription-strength fluoride can make a big difference.
✅ 6. Watch your diet
Limit sugary and acidic drinks, focus on protein and nutrient-dense foods, and keep calcium intake up to support bone and enamel health.
⚠️ Bottom line:
GLP-1 medications aren’t the enemy — but ignoring oral health while on them can create problems.
With the right care plan, you can protect your smile while improving your overall health.
📩 If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication and haven’t had a dental checkup recently, now is the time.

🪥 Fluoride vs Fluoride-Free Toothpaste — let’s talk about it.
This debate comes up almost every day in the office.
Some patients prefer fluoride-free toothpaste for personal or natural-health reasons, while others want the strongest cavity protection possible. Both perspectives are understandable — but here’s what we actually know.
Fluoride toothpaste is still the most proven way to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities.
Fluoride-free toothpaste can clean your teeth, but it doesn’t provide the same level of protection against decay.
That doesn’t mean you can’t use fluoride-free products. Many patients do.
It just means you should make sure you’re getting fluoride protection in other ways.
✔ Professional fluoride treatments at your dental visits
✔ Prescription-strength fluoride if you’re high risk
✔ More frequent cleanings if needed
✔ Staying consistent with home care
Think of it this way:
You don’t have to use fluoride every day — but your teeth still benefit from it.
If you prefer fluoride-free toothpaste, let your dentist know so we can build a prevention plan that keeps your teeth strong long-term.
Healthy teeth > internet arguments.

💉👄 “Ozempic Mouth” — What do we actually know?
As GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy become more common, many patients are asking about changes in their teeth, gums, and facial appearance.
The truth is — as of now, there are no clinical studies proving these medications directly harm the mouth.
But there are several known side effects that may increase risk over time, and research is still evolving.
Here’s what we do know so far:
🔬 Less saliva – GLP-1 medications may reduce saliva flow, and saliva is your mouth’s main defense against cavities, acid, and bacteria.
🤢 Reflux & vomiting – Common side effects can expose teeth to stomach acid, which can weaken enamel.
⚖️ Rapid weight loss – Fast changes in body fat can also affect facial volume, leading to what some people call “Ozempic mouth,” with more lines or hollowing around the lips and cheeks.
🍬 Diet changes – Appetite shifts can sometimes lead to more frequent snacking or sugar intake, which increases cavity risk.
❗Right now, this doesn’t mean Ozempic is damaging your teeth.
It means we don’t have long-term data yet, and as more patients use GLP-1 medications, the dental and medical community will continue to learn more.
✅ If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, regular dental care and monitoring are more important than ever.
📩 Questions about oral or facial changes while on Ozempic or Wegovy? We’re happy to help.

It’s Monday.
No shortcuts. No excuses. No waiting for motivation.
This week’s reminder from Dwayne Johnson:
“Be humble. Be hungry. And always be the hardest worker in the room.”
Be humble — there’s always more to learn.
Be hungry — don’t get comfortable where you are.
Be the hardest worker — because effort is the one thing you control.
You don’t need to be the most talented.
You don’t need to have the best connections.
You don’t need to feel ready.
You just need to outwork yesterday’s version of yourself.
This Monday:
• Sit in the front.
• Ask the question.
• Stay after.
• Do one more rep.
• Study 30 minutes longer.
Quiet effort compounds.
And eventually? It shows.
