Did you know that brain surgery for Parkinson's disease or tremors is actually SAFER than many everyday surgeries?

Our neurosurgery team at Jefferson published a new study in Annals of Neurology — and the results might surprise you.

We looked at nearly 3 million surgeries across the country and found that Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has:
✅ LOWER complication rates than knee replacement, hip replacement, hysterectomy, and spine surgery
✅ Just about every patient went directly home after the procedure
✅ No higher risk of stroke or neurological injury than any of the comparison surgeries

DBS is a life-changing treatment for people with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and epilepsy — but fear of "brain surgery" stops too many people from even asking about it.

The data say: it's time to rethink those fears. 💙

If someone you love has been told DBS might help — please share this with them. And talk to your doctor.

Objective Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established surgical therapy for movement disorders, epilepsy, and psychiatric conditions, yet remains underutilized due to perceived risks. We therefore...

The Vickie & Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience at Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital has successfully performed its first pipeline embolization to treat a complex aneurysm near the eye and brain. 🧠

This minimally invasive procedure uses a thin catheter placed through an artery in the wrist or groin to deliver a tiny mesh stent that redirects blood flow away from the weakened vessel. Over time, the aneurysm seals off, helping reduce the risk of rupture, and most patients return home the next day.

We’re proud to bring this highly specialized level of brain and vascular care to Montgomery County!

🧠 Clinical Research Update from Jefferson Neurosurgery

On December 12, 2025, Dr. Chengyuan Wu, in collaboration with Dr. Mijail Serruya, treated the first patient at Jefferson Neurosurgery as part of the Enspire RESTORE DBS Clinical Trial. This investigational research study is evaluating whether Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) combined with rehabilitation may serve as a possible new treatment approach to improve upper-extremity function in individuals living with chronic stroke-related impairment.

The trial builds on encouraging findings from a Phase I study conducted at Cleveland Clinic, which demonstrated that DBS paired with rehabilitation in 12 patients was feasible and showed promising signals of motor improvement in patients with chronic stroke deficits. RESTORE now aims to further evaluate safety and explore potential effectiveness in a broader cohort. The RESTORE trial is designed to further assess the safety and potential effectiveness of this approach. Participation contributes to ongoing research exploring additional options for stroke recovery.

What an incredible day of collaboration at our Mobile Stroke Unit 2.0 EMS & Public Safety Outreach Symposium!

Built on the partnership between Jefferson Health and Upper Merion Township, this program brings innovative stroke care directly to the field.

From hands-on simulations to meaningful conversations, this event showcased what’s possible when we come together to advance prehospital stroke care. The symposium featured program and clinical insights from Dr. Robert Rosenwasser, President & CEO of the Farber Institute for Neuroscience; Dr. Alvin Wang, Medical Director of the Jefferson Mobile Stroke Units, who presented on MSU operations, workflow, and system integration; and Dr. Nikolaos Mouchtouris and Dr. Elias Atallah, who shared case studies and highlighted Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital’s stroke and neurosurgical capabilities.

Thank you to the EMS and public safety professionals who joined us for a day of learning, engagement, and strengthening regional stroke care.
