For Disability Pride Month, First-Person Reflections on Disability Self-Advocacy: In these essays, writers with communication-related disabilities — and, in some cases, their family members — describe rising to challenges by speaking up for themselves and other disabled people. The package also includes perspectives of CSD professionals associated with these writers.

The related illustration depicts the Disability Pride flag, with color bands representing red for physical disabilities, gold for neurodiversity, white for invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, blue for emotional and psychiatric disabilities, and green for sensory disabilities. The colors are muted to accommodate sensory sensitivities.

Among the flag’s key messages are promoting full participation for disabled people and celebrating their individuality and contributions, messages reflected in the following essays. Read more: https://at.asha.org/Ir

We are grateful for Lisa Brown-Miller's family and their decision to donate the Olympic gold medalist and U.S. women’s ice hockey legend's brain to Boston University CTE Center after her death earlier this month. Lisa died by su***de after enduring a lifetime of repetitive head impacts playing hockey.

The Brown-Miller family hopes the donation will help advance understanding, prevention, and treatment of the degenerative brain disease CTE, and shed light on the unique risks faced by female athletes in contact sports.

Brown-Miller was a member of the historic 1998 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team that won the first-ever gold medal awarded in the sport. She is a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame & the Providence College Athletics Hall of Fame. Off the ice, she coached and mentored countless young athletes, including during her tenure as head coach of the Princeton University women’s team.

We are proud to honor her legacy.
