What is the 20-20-20 rule?
In the digital age, most of us are constantly looking at screens, whether it is a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. The most common complaint from patients who are on screens all day is eyestrain or eye fatigue. Eyestrain is a very common condition that occurs when your eyes get tired from intense use. Because most of us are required to utilize screens for work, there is only so much you can do to eliminate eyestrain.

The number one recommendation for patients who suffer from digital eyestrain is to get glasses with a blue light filter, eliminating most of the harmful blue light that is emitted from technological devices. Another method of relieving eyestrain is called the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus on something 20 feet away. Give this a try next time you are experiencing eye fatigue and see if it makes a difference for you! What is blue light and why should you protect your eyes from it?
Sunlight is the main source of blue light, and being outdoors during daylight is where we get most of our exposure to it. But there are many other sources of blue light — including LED lighting and flat-panel screens. Most notably, the screens of computers, tablets, smartphones and other digital devices produce significant levels of blue light. The two biggest benefits to wearing blue light blocking lenses are:

Reducing blue light exposure can help combat digital eye strain
Blocking blue light will increase your quality of sleep by helping to regulate your circadian rhythm

Some blue light exposure is essential for good health, so 100% protection from all blue light is not a good idea. Research also has shown that high-energy visible light boosts alertness, helps memory and cognitive function, and elevates mood. Heterochromia is when an individual has two different color irises. This can be genetic or caused by a problem during development, ocular disease, or injury. Eye color can be affected later in life by trauma or ocular disease, but you can also choose to change it yourself with colored contact lenses!
