HealthShare Exchange

HealthShare Exchange HSX is a nonprofit formed to facilitate the electronic sharing of medical records between hospitals, doctors, and insurers.

HealthShare Exchange presents one of the most significant opportunities for the Commonwealth to utilize Health Information Exchange (HIE) to produce meaningful benefits for the healthcare system. Due to the sheer size of the market, dollars invested in regional health information exchange in Southeastern Pennsylvania have the potential for significantly greater ROI than in other regions of Pennsyl

vania. HSX has initially based its technology approach on the DIRECT technology framework, which sends encrypted health information to known, trusted recipients over the Internet. This framework was originally conceived as part of the DIRECT Project, an open government initiative started by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for health information technology. HealthShare Exchange’s intent is to evolve its initial technology services from secure messaging to robust query exchange with local, state and, federal entities within a few years.
