I had the chance to spend time with a local dystonia support group, and I’m still thinking about their strength and honest insight. They shared openly because they felt understood and trusted that their experiences would be met with care. Many spoke about how they often feel misunderstood and how isolating that can be.

These slides reflect what they live with day to day, and what they wish more people knew. There is so much resilience here💚

Whether you live with dystonia or support someone who does—what do you wish more people knew?

Imagine your brain as a computer, constantly processing and sending signals to control your daily movements and functions.

With FND, it’s like your brain is experiencing a ‘software glitch’ & the signals get disrupted or misdirected, leading to altered communication of your brain networks.

The brain’s physical structure is like the computer’s hardware: it’s physically intact. However, the communication system (the software) is where things are getting disrupted…just like a computer program running slow or freezing up.

For people with FND, this miscommunication causes real symptoms.

The good news? The brain has a remarkable ability to ‘rewire’ itself through neuroplasticity. This means the brain can form new connections and pathways, essentially updating its software to improve the sending and receiving of daily signals. It’s like reinstalling a program or updating your system. 👏🧠🦾

At NeuPath, we focus on harnessing the power of neuroplasticity to help promote new connections for the brain to send and receive signals. This is done through targeted exercises, autonomic regulation, sensory processing, and movement strategies.

The brain is adaptable, and with the right guidance, you can reprogram the software!

🧠 Understanding Dystonia
Dystonia is a movement disorder that can cause involuntary muscle contractions resulting in abnormal postures. It can present in many different ways, and symptoms are unique from person to person. Regardless of presentation, the impact dystonia can have on daily life can be significant.

Because of this variability, individualized treatment is key. Physical therapy plays a valuable role in helping you improve movement control and support the brain’s ability to rewire through neuroplasticity.

Physical therapy helps by:
✅ Educating and understanding symptoms
✅ Retraining sensory–motor connections
✅ Regulating the nervous system
✅ Promoting neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to rewire and restore movement

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) isn’t diagnosed by ruling everything else out. It’s diagnosed by ruling FND in! 🧠

FND has its own positive, recognizable clinical signs that can be seen during a neurological exam. These signs and patterns help clinicians understand how the brain and body are functioning.

Some examples of these positive signs include:
✨ Hoover’s sign — a test showing movement potential when attention is shifted.
✨ Entrainment test — looking at how tremor patterns change when rhythm or focus shifts.
✨ Symptom variability — symptoms that fluctuate depending on attention, focus, or environment.

Because FND can sometimes look similar to other neurological conditions, it’s essential to find clinicians who understand these positive features and can diagnose and treat FND with confidence and accuracy.
