Penn Medicine Information Services Penn Medicine's Information Services (IS) department focuses its efforts on the clinical and financial systems that support the day-to-day operations.
(1)

Providing information technology support to Penn Medicine's mission of world class patient care and research is the primary objective of the Penn Medicine Information Services ("IS") department. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to implement and integrate applications as well as acquire and distribute codified patient data throughout the clinical and research arena. As many of these solutions are now in place across the Penn Medicine enterprise, the focus shifts to using this data to make more informed decisions from a patient care, research and medical education perspective. Evidence of these efforts can be found in the development of an enterprise data warehouse, Penn Data Store, where aggregated patient data from all patient care settings may be utilized to support patient care, community health, quality initiatives and research criteria. In addition, best practice clinical alerts, clinical decision support and clinical reminders are now consistently to enhance caregiver decisions. Finally, the Information Services department's support of Penn Medicine's genomic efforts and linking this data to drive personalized patient care is a new frontier that Penn Medicine and several other leading edge organizations are aggressively pursuing. The past several years for the Penn Medicine has been very exciting and has served to put a solid foundation in place for an even more exciting and ground-breaking upcoming years for the Penn Medicine Information Services department.

AMIA’s Clinical Informatics Conference, held from May 20th - May 22nd gathered and connected clinical informaticians to share their innovation into practice-ready solutions that make an immediate impact on patient care.
Asaf Hanish, Lead Data Scientist for Penn DnA, represented Penn Medicine with his presentation on Adoption and Utility: Evaluation of Usage Rate and Editing Overlap for Artificial Intelligence-Drafted Replies to Patient Messages. The session provided insight into the implementation and evaluation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to respond to patient portal messages. Attendees learned about the high variation in usage rates and editing efforts, prompting a discussion of best practices for implementation of these technologies in attendees’ own clinical settings. They also learned data analysis and visualization strategies they can apply when implementing and evaluating the utility of AI tools in clinical practice.

Joy Iocca, Sr. Director Clinical Informatics, also presented on EHR integrated clinical pathways: a rapidly iterative, experimental approach for Learning Health Systems. The session showed how Penn Medicine used an existing clinical pathways program and a new alliance to establish a Learning Health System (LHS) model to integrate evidence-based clinical pathways into an EHR. Integrated pathways enabled real-time guidance, outcome assessment, and clinician feedback. This LHS model rapidly deployed evidence-based pathways, improved workflows, and increased preferred treatment orders, demonstrating a simple, scalable approach to high-quality care integration.
