In celebration of , we invited colleagues to share their thoughts and stories as proud Red Crossers that make up our inclusive team in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Today, we feature a blog post by Immunohematology Reference Lab technologist and communications volunteer Samantha Munro.
Sam writes, "Being Black in America is ever-changing and stagnant at the same time, depending on where you are and who you are around. I’ve had a variety of experiences, some positive, some negative, and some funny."
She shares a story about her time volunteering on Navajo reservation in New Mexico during college. While visiting a school, a young child rubbed Sam's forehead, attempting to clean her skin. She hurried to the restroom only to find there was nothing on her face.
"I quickly realized what happened...I was probably the first Black person the little girl had ever seen," she writes.
