Brownsey
Daniel P., July 20, 2025. Age 85.
The following was lovingly composed by Daniel‘s family.
Our beloved and much celebrated Dan Brownsey passed away on Sunday, July 20th at the age of 85. He is reunited with his wife Sally, whom he was married to for 59 years. Big Dan was the loving father of Kellie (Greg) Steller, Danny, Kathi, son-in-law Chris, Jimmy (Mona), and cherished Pop-Pop of Nicholas, Caroline, and Shannon. Dan was part of a great Irish and English family and joins his Dad, Mom, sister Marge, brothers John, Andy, and Larry in heaven. He was brother in-law to Mona Schlussel, Jimmy Grant, and Patsy Grant. He is also now re-connected with his heavenly Grant family including brothers-in-laws Jack, Sonny, Bob, and Gary and sisters-in-laws Mary, Peggy, and HelenAnn. Uncle Dan loved his all of his nieces and nephews, and was Godfather for many.
Dan was born to Lawrence and Mary Kathleen (Dooner) Brownsey on October 3rd, 1939 in Philadelphia. He grew up in Lawncrest and was part of Saint William’s parish. In Lawncrest, “little Nuker” met life long friends like John Fitzmartin and Joe Clark. (We know Joe and he are having a beer in heaven now!) Dan went to Father Judge High School and graduated as part of their first class in 1957. He also went to Drexel University and became a brilliant engineer for Raytheon (formerly United Engineers), where he worked for almost 40 years.
Dan met the love of his life, Sally, when she started working as a hairdresser for his sister Marge. Dan and Sally married on April 27, 1963. Dan and Sally dedicated their lives to raising their 4 children in the Burholme section of Philadelphia. Dan spared no expense or time for his family - whether it was a pool or playground trip to Jardel, a summer trek to the beach, or even a cross country train trip to California, to visit Uncle Jack and Aunt Mary. He also “loved the Jersey shore” and rented the Roman’s 68th street house in Sea Isle City for 26 years.
Dan also appreciated the arts. He loved opera and attended many live performances with Sally. He liked classical music and had tickets to the Kimmel Center for many seasons. He was an avid traveler and his travels took Sally and he all over the world. In his later years, he relished his winter breaks in San Diego, CA then in Clearwater, FL. Dan was a great chef, having learned his skills as a short order cook in the Merchant Marines. While Dan could cook anything, his breakfasts were his pride and joy - especially on Sundays at Whitaker Avenue or down the shore. We will also miss his Irish coffee with hand whipped cream in his custom Irish coffee glasses.
Dan was the epitome of a Philly sports fan. He never missed a Phillies game on TV and often enjoyed the simple pleasure of listening to the ball game outside in his backyard, on the 68th street deck, or on the beach. Likewise he loved the Eagles and our fall and winter Sunday family dinners were either at half time or after the game. He had no lack of words for what the Phillies bull pen or the Eagles quarterbacks did wrong. He watched Flyers games and college basketball and took his kids to many Philly sports’ games. He even liked attending a Father Judge football game at Northeast high school.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday July 24th, 9:00am-10:45am and to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am; both will be at Resurrection of Our Lord, 2000 Shelmire Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa. Internment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dan’s name to Father Judge High School at https://www.friendsoffatherjudge.com/crusader-campaign.html
