So often patients walk into a therapy session saying they just want to be happy. I believe that "happy, comes and happy goes." No one is happy all the time. What is more important than seeking happiness is seeking meaning in your life.

When you do good deeds and help others you experience meaningful connections as well as feel better about yourself. This tends to lower anxiety and depression.

Instead of simply focusing on self-care we should also focus on how we can do good in the world and care for others. 🙏

We often talk about setting boundaries with other people, but it is important to set boundaries for yourself too.

The main goal is to protect your time and energy.

Setting boundaries helps you prioritize yourself by being present for what is important to you. It also helps you live in alignment with your own values. 🙏

Meet our Intern: Elizabeth Taylor, MS.

Liz is currently pursuing her counselor licensure while working towards her mental pertormance consultant certification (CMPC) as well as a PhD in Sports and Performance Psychology.

She is completing both her practicum and internship with us over a two year span. Liz is a lovely addition to our staff and has grown by leaps and bounds in the 6 months that she has been in our practice.

The famous poet Mary Oliver posed this question in a poem she wrote over 30 years ago. Somehow recently, l've been thinking about it a lot and have found myself discussing it with a couple of my patients. I think it has resonated more with me this past year since l've lost several family members as well as navigated a child's illness. I have been reminded about the finite amount of time we all have on this planet.

The good part of all this loss is that you realize what really matters, and that our lives are meant to be seized.

My answer to the poet is simply this:

Mary, I plan to live! I want to seize every moment of joy as well as be present for the sadness. I want to embrace it all. I want to travel to foreign lands and learn about other cultures. I also want to be still and present for all of the small sacred moments that happen locally, the good and the bad experiences of my family and friends.

I want to continue to support the incredible patients who share the gifts of their stories with me. I plan to continue to laugh whole heartedly but also share the quiet moments of truly listening to others. I want to continue to live passionately, embrace the messiness of life and love with my whole heart.

How do you plan on living your one wild and precious life?🙏 (photo credit Sari Lifsh*tz)

My advice for today is to follow your intuition. We all have a "gut instinct,," a sense of knowing what is the right thing for us to do.

For example, we know immediately when we meet people whether they are good for us or not. The night I met my husband, my first thought after meeting him was that he was going to be a pivotal person in my life.
Similarly, when I first met my best friend, I instantly thought of the word home. She felt familiar to me, even though we had never met before.

On a different note, I also have had intuition that has told me relationships didn't feel safe. I would have a feeling of danger that I quickly tried to rationalize and quiet. Every time I have ignored those initial feelings, I later grew to regret it.

Whether it is with a job, a friendship, or a potential partner, trust your gut. Your intuition is magic.
Xoxo, Alyson
