This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Arlene Bennett, who became PSOM’s first Black female graduate in 1964 and has spent her career serving underserved communities. Now 91, she continues to see patients as a psychiatrist, fulfilling the dream she had as a child. “I really felt that I could make a difference,” she said.

We also recognize Dr. Nathan Mossell, PSOM’s first Black graduate, and Dr. Helen O. Dickens, its first Black female professor and a leader in women’s health. Their legacies continue to shape the future of medicine.

Taking care of others is what Bennett has done since 1964 when she graduated from the Perelman School of Medicine. She didn't realize at the time that she was making history.
