Headaches, Poor Sleep, General Tension? Start with the Spine

Some days, your body just feels “off.” Maybe you’re sleeping okay, eating pretty well, stretching when you can, but the tension keeps creeping back. What’s happening?

One possibility is that spinal tension interferes with how your nervous system supports the rest of your body. Nerves branch out from your spine, influencing everything from muscle tone to how well you can wind down at night. If alignment is off, even slightly, it can add extra stress behind the scenes.

Common signs include a headache that returns after sitting or screen time, a heavy or tense feeling in the shoulders, and restlessness or shallow sleep.

These aren’t always “fixable” with posture alone. Chiropractic care focuses on improving spinal movement so that nerve signals can travel more freely without adding extra work to your body.

If you’re feeling like your usual strategies aren’t cutting it, a check-in with your spine might offer some helpful clues.

Chiropractic Doesn’t Hide Discomfort, It Helps Clear the Path

Discomfort is a signal, not a flaw. Whether it’s a tight neck, a dull ache in your lower back, or stiffness that shows up out of nowhere, pain is your body’s way of saying, “Pay attention here.”

Quick fixes, such as anti-inflammatories or pain relief creams, may help in the short term, but they don’t explain why the issue keeps recurring. If symptoms are recurring, there’s often an underlying movement issue that’s interfering with how your body functions.

Chiropractic care examines spinal motion and how it may affect the nervous system’s ability to manage stress, coordinate movement, and support healing. We use a variety of techniques to restore better alignment and reduce built-up tension.

This kind of care doesn’t “treat pain”; it helps clear the interference that may be contributing to it.

If your go-to solutions aren’t providing lasting relief, it might be time to examine what your spine is doing behind the scenes.

Healing on Pause?

Your Spine Might Be Sending Mixed Signals
Some people bounce back fast from a strain or sore spot. Others stay stuck in a holding pattern. If your recovery feels slower than it used to, the issue may be deeper than muscle tension; it could involve your nervous system.

Your spine protects the network of nerves that carry healing signals throughout your body. But those signals can get scrambled when movement is restricted due to sitting, past injuries, or even stress. Healing still happens, but it may feel slow, incomplete, or inconsistent.

During a chiropractic visit, we assess how your spine moves and look for areas where joint restrictions may interfere with nerve communication. Techniques like hands-on adjustments or gentle instrument-based care can help restore motion so your body can repair more efficiently.

If you’ve been waiting for healing that just isn’t kicking in, this may be a good time to see whether your spine is adding friction to the process.

Why Your Shoulder Pain Might Actually Be a Neck Problem

That nagging shoulder pain that won’t go away? It might not be coming from your shoulder at all. Your neck and shoulder are intimately connected through a complex network of nerves, muscles, and fascia, which means problems in one area often show up as pain in another.
When vertebrae in your cervical spine become misaligned or compressed, they can irritate nerves that travel down into your shoulder and arm. This creates what we call “referred pain” – discomfort that you feel in one location but actually originates somewhere else.

This is why rubbing your shoulder or applying heat might provide temporary relief, but the pain keeps returning. You’re treating the symptom, not the source. Many patients initially come to Casteel Chiropractic Clinic frustrated because months of shoulder treatments haven’t helped.

If your shoulder pain is accompanied by neck stiffness, headaches, or arm tingling, there’s a good chance your neck is the real culprit. The good news? Once we identify and treat the actual source, lasting relief often follows quickly.

Why Your Smartphone is Rewiring Your Spine (And How to Fight Back)

Have you ever noticed neck stiffness after a long texting session or felt like your shoulders are permanently hunched forward? You’re experiencing what’s become known as “text neck” or “tech neck” – and it’s literally changing the structure of your spine.

The Hidden Weight Your Neck is Carrying

Your head weighs about as much as a heavy bowling ball in a neutral position. But here’s where it gets alarming: when texting on a phone, it is common to bend the head forward and look down at a 45- or 60-degree angle, which creates five times the amount of force on the neck.

Think about that for a moment – you’re essentially asking your neck to support the weight of a small child every time you check your phone. Over the course of a year, this amounts to an additional 1,000 to 1,400 hours of pressure on the average smartphone user’s spine.

How Your Smartphone Changes Your Spine

Text neck isn’t just temporary discomfort – it’s creating lasting changes in your spinal structure. Research in the journal Ergonomics found that study participants had more forward head posture while texting compared to other smartphone tasks, such as web browsing or watching a video.

This happens because texting typically requires both hands and more screen interaction, naturally pulling your shoulders forward and head down. Over time, mechanical stress in the cervical spine due to erroneous cell phone use induces poor posture and incorrect body alignment, which is associated with dysfunctional movement patterns, weak balance-ability and distorted function of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and nervous systems.

Fighting Back: Practical Solutions

The good news is that you don’t have to give up your smartphone to protect your spine. Here are evidence-based strategies to reduce your risk:

Bring Your Phone to Eye Level: Instead of looking down at your device, raise it to eye level. This simple change dramatically reduces the forward head posture that creates so much stress on your neck.
Take Regular Movement Breaks: Set reminders to look up and move every 20-30 minutes. Simple neck stretches and shoulder rolls can help counteract the forward posture.
Strengthen Your Postural Muscles: Focus on exercises that strengthen your upper back and neck muscles. These help maintain proper alignment even when you do need to look down.
Be Mindful of Your Texting Position: When possible, use voice-to-text features or make phone calls instead of lengthy text conversations. When you do text, try to keep sessions shorter.
At Casteel Chiropractic Clinic, we see the effects of text neck regularly and can help restore proper spinal alignment before minor issues become major problems. Through targeted adjustments and personalized exercise programs, we can help reverse the damage that constant smartphone use creates.

Don’t let your smartphone control your posture – take control today and schedule an appointment to learn how we can help protect your spine for years to come.

The Real Reason You Feel Taller After an Adjustment

Have you ever walked out of a chiropractic appointment feeling like you’re standing straighter and somehow taller? That sensation isn’t just in your head – there’s actually a reason behind why many patients experience this immediate change after spinal adjustments.

While chiropractic care can’t actually make your bones grow longer, it could help you reach your full height potential in ways that might surprise you.

Your Spine Compresses More Than You Think

Throughout a normal day, gravity takes a toll on your spine. The constant pressure of being upright compresses your spinal vertebrae, and you may lose up to a centimeter of height in an average day. This is why you’re actually slightly taller when you wake up in the morning compared to when you go to bed.

NASA discovered something remarkable when studying astronauts: they grew about three percent taller while in space due to the lack of gravitational pull on their vertebrae. When there’s no gravitational force, the vertebrae naturally relax and expand. While we can’t escape gravity here on Earth, chiropractic adjustments could provide similar decompressive effects.

What Happens During Spinal Decompression

When chiropractors perform adjustments, they’re essentially creating (very small) space between compressed vertebrae. The discs between the vertebrae in your spine act as cushions, and anything that deflates those cushions can detract from your height, including poor posture, misalignment, and daily gravitational compression.

Chiropractic adjustments work by providing negative pressure in the area around the spinal discs, allowing the vertebrae to relax and lengthen. Your intervertebral disc height decreases when your compressed spine causes the fluid inside a disc to leak. By decompressing your intervertebral discs, chiropractic adjustments reduce pressure on your discs, allowing them to relax to a more normal state and improve the integrity of the disc.

The Posture Connection

Poor posture is one of the biggest factors that can make you appear shorter than your natural height. Years of slouching, hunching over computers, or carrying heavy bags can alter your natural spinal curvature. Over time, slumping and slouching can shift your body’s natural curves, stunting or masking your natural height.

When chiropractors correct spinal misalignments, they’re helping restore your spine’s natural curvature. This allows you to stand at your full natural height. Think of it like straightening a bent straw – the straw doesn’t actually get longer, but when it’s straight, it reaches its full length potential.

Beyond Height: The Real Benefits

While feeling taller is a nice bonus, the real benefits of spinal decompression go far beyond height perception. Proper spinal alignment supports optimal nerve function, improves posture, reduces pain, and enhances overall mobility. Many patients also report better breathing, improved confidence, and reduced tension throughout their body.

If you’ve been feeling compressed, hunched, or simply not standing as tall as you’d like, the team at Casteel Chiropractic Clinic can help assess your spinal health and create a personalized treatment plan. Experience the confidence that comes from standing at your full height potential – schedule your adjustment today and discover how much taller you can feel.

How Chiropractic Can Help Minimize Your Pain in the Warmer Weather

Summer’s here and you want to enjoy it as much as possible. Unfortunately, many of the fun activities of summer also put you at risk of back, neck or joint pain. Chiropractic can be a highly effective way to treat those conditions.

How Chiropractic Helps in the Summer
You can’t wait for your vacation, right! If you’re traveling any distance, though, especially by automobile, you can put a lot of strain on your back. A series of chiropractic adjustments can relieve tension in your neck and back, so that you can relax and enjoy your time off.

Of course, summer’s also the time to get back into outdoor activities, from hiking and camping to recreational sports. If you’ve been mostly sedentary during the winter, you may be a bit stiff when you first get back outdoors, or your body may tighten up as you return to action. Chiropractic can help your whole body relax, easing your discomfort, but also minimizing the risk of injury.

Plan to spend a lot of time in the chaise longue this summer? It’s a great way to relax, but it’s also an unusual position for your body. That can cause inflammation or other responses that will put a real damper on your efforts to take it easy. Chiropractic can help alleviate joint inflexibility, maximize blood flow and minimize pain and stiffness throughout your body.
