Phillipsburg Emergency Squad

Phillipsburg Emergency Squad 911 Emergency Medical Response The Phillipsburg Emergency Squad was planned on their trip home. Harvey Mowder, of Washington, was the first instructor.

SQUAD HISTORY

The idea of an Emergency Squad for Phillipsburg was born in an automobile between Washington and Phillipsburg on an evening in 1936. The four men in the automobile were Ira Snyder, Alfred Bates, Lewis Silverthorn and Charles Shappel, Jr., who was to serve as squad captain for twenty-seven years. The group was returning from a demonstration put on by the Washington Fire Department F

irst Aid and Rescue Squad at the Washington Boro Hall, The event had been arranged by Vernon "Bab" Oakes, captain of that squad and a former fire chief. The Phillipsburg Squad was never a part of the fire or police departments, but its original membership was drawn from those departments. Included were two firemen from each of the six fire companies and two policeman. Later the membership was increased to sixteen, and still later to thirty-five. In its early days the firehouse of the Lincoln Engine Co. was it headquarters. The membership again was increased in 1979, this time to fifty. At the end of the year, eight of the additional openings were filled, four of them by the Squad's first women members. A Junior membership was instituted in 1974 and now has an enrollment of eight. The Squad responds to more calls than any other in the County. Reports show that 2065 calls were answered in 2004. Groups of volunteers sleep at headquarters to answer night calls more quickly.

The Officers and Members of the Phillipsburg Emergency Squad extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the men and women of the Central Berks Regional Police Department, as well as to the family, friends, and loved ones of Officer Kristen Yeager.

Officer Yeager made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on May 29, 2026, while answering the call to serve and protect her community. Her courage, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to others embody the very best of public service.

As first responders, we understand the bond that unites those who answer the call, no matter the uniform we wear. Today, we mourn alongside our law enforcement brothers and sisters and honor a life dedicated to protecting others.

May her family find strength in the love and support that surrounds them, and may her fellow officers find comfort in knowing that her service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Rest easy, Officer Yeager. Your watch has ended, but your legacy will live on in the lives you touched and the communities you served. We will carry your memory forward and take it from here.

With profound respect and gratitude,
The Officers and Members of the Phillipsburg Emergency Squad 🚑💙🖤

New Jersey’s EMS system has answered every call this state has placed before it and now it’s time for Trenton to answer ours.

We urge New Jersey legislators to vote YES on Bill S1421 and finally provide meaningful support to the men and women of EMS.

For decades, EMS professionals and volunteers have stood on the front lines during some of the most difficult moments in our nation’s history. We responded on September 11th. We carried our communities through the COVID 19 pandemic. And now, with the FIFA World Cup coming to New Jersey, EMS agencies are once again preparing to stretch already thin resources to protect millions of residents and visitors.

While these large-scale events come and go, one thing never stops, EMS still answers millions of calls every single year. Cardiac arrests, overdoses, motor vehicle accidents, shootings, fires, strokes, and everyday emergencies continue no matter what crisis is happening around us.

Yet despite the increasing demands, many EMS agencies across New Jersey continue to struggle with staffing shortages, rising operational costs, outdated equipment, burnout, and limited state support. Expectations for EMS continue to rise, but the investment in EMS has not kept pace.

New Jersey depends on EMS every hour of every day. It is time for New Jersey to stand behind the very system that stands behind its citizens.

Vote YES on S1421. Support EMS. Support the people who never stop answering the call.
