Phillipsburg Emergency Squad 911 Emergency Medical Response The Phillipsburg Emergency Squad was planned on their trip home. Harvey Mowder, of Washington, was the first instructor.

SQUAD HISTORY

The idea of an Emergency Squad for Phillipsburg was born in an automobile between Washington and Phillipsburg on an evening in 1936. The four men in the automobile were Ira Snyder, Alfred Bates, Lewis Silverthorn and Charles Shappel, Jr., who was to serve as squad captain for twenty-seven years. The group was returning from a demonstration put on by the Washington Fire Department First Aid and Rescue Squad at the Washington Boro Hall, The event had been arranged by Vernon "Bab" Oakes, captain of that squad and a former fire chief. The Phillipsburg Squad was never a part of the fire or police departments, but its original membership was drawn from those departments. Included were two firemen from each of the six fire companies and two policeman. Later the membership was increased to sixteen, and still later to thirty-five. In its early days the firehouse of the Lincoln Engine Co. was it headquarters. The membership again was increased in 1979, this time to fifty. At the end of the year, eight of the additional openings were filled, four of them by the Squad's first women members. A Junior membership was instituted in 1974 and now has an enrollment of eight. The Squad responds to more calls than any other in the County. Reports show that 2065 calls were answered in 2004. Groups of volunteers sleep at headquarters to answer night calls more quickly.

It is with heavy hearts that the Officers and Members of the Phillipsburg Emergency Squad extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Detective Brett Marino of the Phillipsburg Police Department.

Detective Marino bravely fought his battle with the same courage, strength, and determination that he showed every day while serving our community. His dedication to protecting and serving the people of Phillipsburg will never be forgotten.

We stand with our brothers and sisters of the Phillipsburg Police Department, and with Detective Marino’s family and friends, during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Detective Marino. Your service, sacrifice, and spirit will live on in all of us. 💙🕊️

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Phillipsburg Police Department announces the passing of Detective Sergeant Brett Marino #321.

Det. Sgt. Marino was a proud 13-year veteran of our department whose talent, dedication, and relentless work ethic were recognized early in his career. He quickly earned a position as a Detective in our Special Operations Division, a specialized unit focused on investigating narcotics and street crime related offenses. In that role, Brett’s commitment to protecting our community and seeking justice never wavered.

To those who knew him, Brett was far more than a police officer. He was everyone’s best friend, the one who could make you laugh when you needed it most, the steady voice of reason when chaos loomed, and the kind of person who made every room brighter simply by being in it. His courage, iconic humor, and strength during his battle were nothing short of heroic and inspiring.

While doctors offered a six-month prognosis, Brett refused to accept it, fighting with everything he had for nearly two years, demonstrating an unshakable will and warrior’s spirit every step of the way.

Det. Sgt. Marino is survived by his loving wife, four beautiful children, three brothers, one sister, many close relatives, and an entire family in blue who will forever honor his memory.

To our community, thank you for being with us and please join in keeping Sergeant Marino, his family, and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

💙 💙

Forever a hero. Forever family.

Congratulations Officer Brandon Hull!

The Officers and Members of the Phillipsburg Emergency Squad would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Officer Brandon Hull of the Phillipsburg Police Department. Your hard work, dedication, and commitment to serving our community do not go unnoticed, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement with you.

Thank you for your service and continued partnership in keeping Phillipsburg safe.

As our 2025 Law Enforcement Hometown Heroes program comes to a close, it is my honor to recognize Officer Brandon Hull of the Phillipsburg Police Department, NJ for our final week.

Earlier this year, Officer Hull responded to a shooting outside a local daycare where nearly 20 rounds had been fired. Remaining vigilant under pressure, he identified a suspect attempting to flee the scene and, along with fellow officers, initiated a felony vehicle stop. That decisive action led to the arrest of a dangerous individual and the recovery of a handgun with an illegal extended magazine.

Officer Hull's courage and commitment to safeguarding the citizens of Phillipsburg reflect the very best of law enforcement. On behalf of NJ-07, thank you to Officer Hull and the entire Phillipsburg Police Department for your unwavering dedication and service to the community.
