As a speech therapist and a mom, I have a love/hate relationship with milestones.

✨On the one hand, they are important! A basic awareness of milestones is important because they help us identify when a child may need extra support, which (hopefully) results in accessing early intervention services. Having this knowledge can help parents feel empowered to support their child’s development.

✨On the other hand, milestone charts can be stressful. If we focus on them too much, these charts can rob our joy as parents. It’s hard to enjoy the present when we are constantly looking forward for what “should” be happening next. And for families who already know that their child needs extra support, these charts are often not helpful and can feel very discouraging.

✨So please take what you need from this and leave the rest behind.

You’re doing great 💛

Are you looking for the perfect book for your baby or toddler?

As a speech-language pathologist, I’m always on the hunt for books to support early language development.

All of these books were written by pediatric speech-language pathologists. They were specifically created with early language development in mind, and will be a great addition to your book collection!

Is your little one working on first words?
If so, you’re going to want to read this! ⬇️

Hi 👋 I’m Alison, a speech-language pathologist and a mom.

✨ Please and thank you are great! But they aren’t super helpful for early communicators.

✨ If our goal is to empower children with effective communication, we need to begin by focusing on words that will do just that…help them communicate!

✨ This list of “power words” will vary for each family, based on individual preferences, cultural considerations, and current level of communication.

✨ But the idea remains the same: focus on words that pack the most bang for their buck (so to speak).

📌 It’s important to note that families are a very important part of the goal-writing process. Once I explain the reasoning behind not focusing on please and thank you, they are typically on board. However, if these words are very important to families, of course we work on them! But you can bet I’ll still sneak those power words in every chance I get.

✨ What are your thoughts on this? Would you add anything to this list of power words? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇️

🫧 Is your little one in their bubble era?

Bubbles are always a fan favorite! As a pediatric speech therapist, I use them allll day long. I even keep emergency bubbles in my car. You just never know!

The next time your little one reaches for the bubbles, try incorporating some of these fun sounds and functional vocabulary.

What would you add to this list? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇️

Steal this simple ✨Speech Therapy✨ trick!

Hi 👋 I’m Alison, a pediatric speech-language pathologist and mom. Linguistic mapping is an easy way to support your little one’s language development.

And the best part? It doesn’t take any extra time at all! Here’s how it works ⬇️

1️⃣ Any time your child sends you a message, ask yourself, “If they could talk, what would they say?”

2️⃣ Model the language for them!

💫 They may not repeat what you say and that’s okay. The goal is just to provide the language that matches what they are trying to communicate.

Will you give it a try? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇️
