Do you have a shape sorter at home?

Hi 👋 I’m Alison, a pediatric speech-language pathologist and a mom. Keep reading to learn how to level up your shape sorter play 👇

🟣 Many people tend to focus on shapes and colors when playing with this toy (which is okay) but you may get more bang for your buck by focusing on functional words and fun sounds!

🟧 Shapes and colors are academic concepts and aren’t usually super helpful in early communication (if your child has a special interest in shapes and colors, you may choose to incorporate these academic concepts earlier).

🟢 Instead of focusing on shapes and colors, you can model language that gives your little one more power to communicate (help, more, all done, push, uh oh, etc.)

🟨 You can also incorporate fun sounds, which children are more likely to imitate!

Will you give it a try? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇️

Do you know the difference between baby talk and parentese?

If not, you’re not alone!

Don’t worry, using baby talk will not automatically cause your child to need speech therapy 🫠

However, most speech-language pathologists will recommend parentese over baby talk!

If you don’t know the subtle differences, it’s easy to confuse parentese for baby talk. Hopefully this helps!

Those two-word combos are such a fun stage! 😍

Hi 👋 I’m Alison, a speech-language pathologist and a mom. I coach families on how to support their child’s language development through play and daily routines.

💛 Once they have a vocabulary of about 50 words, toddlers usually begin forming early two-word combinations.

💜 Swipe through for 4 things you may not have known about this stage!

Is your little one working on two-word combos? Let me know in the comments below!👇🏼

If you’re trying to work on following directions with your toddler, give these tips a try! ⤵️

It can be tricky to work on following directions for two main reasons:

1️⃣ When children feel like we are constantly giving directions, they lose interest. If the interaction isn’t fun and engaging, they are less likely to follow our directions.

2️⃣ Children often feel pressured when we ask them to follow too many directions, which can cause them to be reluctant to participate.

💡 By making some simple shifts, we can work on following directions in a fun and pressure-free way!

✨ Incorporate directions into play. Model the language that matches what you are doing, and then suggest that your child does something related. Keep it playful.

✨ “I wonder” statements are a great way to give a direction without giving a direction 😉 Use them in play and see what happens!

✨ Scavenger hunts are perfect for giving directions that your child is highly motivated to follow.

Remember to have fun and reduce the pressure. Your little one might surprise you!

Are you waiting to hear your little one say Mama?

Give these fun and simple ideas a try! ⬇️

🌸 Say “Mama” in an excited voice during each of these activities. Your little one will react to your tone of voice and facial expressions.

🌸 Model without expectation. Putting too much pressure on your child to say anything might backfire. Keep the interaction fun and engaging!

Which of these will you try at home? Let me know in the comments below! 👇

Did you know this about speech therapy? 🤔

💫 Speech therapy can happen anywhere! It doesn’t have to be in a certain location or look a certain way.

💫 We need to meet kids where they are…literally! Wherever they are comfortable, that’s where the best therapy will happen. This will look different for everyone.

💫 Where/when have you (or your children) done speech therapy? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇️

If your little one is 10-12 months, you’re going to want to save this post!

✨ As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I am asked about milestones almost every single day.

✨ Milestones are important because they help us identify when a child may need some extra support.

✨ They can also be a big source of stress for parents. If we fixate on them too much, they have a way of robbing our joy.

✨ If you are already aware of milestones and your little one is getting the support they need, then I encourage you to toss this post to the wind. These milestone posts are helpful for many people, but I do realize they don’t serve everyone 💛

What ages would you like to see next? Let me know in the comments below!
Milestone information taken from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and can be found at www.asha.org

Does your child have a baby doll at home?

If you find yourself saying the same thing over and over when you play, don’t worry…you’re not alone! It can be easy to feel like you are stuck in a rut.

✨ Quick tips to get the most out of your baby doll play 👇

🍼 Model a variety of word types (nouns, verbs, describing words, social words)

🍼 As you say a word, pair it with the action (rock, pat, eat, drink, etc.)

🍼 Use fun sound effects and words (burp, slurp, pee-ew!)

🍼 Model and wait. Do something with a baby doll, and then wait to see if your child will imitate.

Will you give any of these a try? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇️
