I went back to for another custom-made orthotic brace for my upper extremity disability. I have had my brachial plexus injury since 2015 and started working with Limb Lab in 2020. Ross over at the Scottsdale Arizona location sure has some patience for me and my meticulously particular ideas and personal styles desired. This is the second time I have personalized and modified The Wilmer brace to suit my active lifestyle as an entrepreneur, athletic rollerskater and all the many various tasks I take on.

On having a paralyzed limb, there’s so many things to consider and be mindful of, it’s a sensitive topic to discuss ones body and impairment, to discuss the possibility of amputation or bracing, to discuss pain and weakness.... It takes an ultra sensitive care team to work with the disabled population, and limb lab has always been wonderful with these discussions.

Limb Lab is wonderful for custom made prosthetics and orthotics and they even helped build me my robotic exoskeleton with the help of Mayo Clinic for the Myomo Robotic exoskeleton.

This is just a reminder to make use of your helper limb as much as possible. Our brain needs that connection as much as we can get it. These uses help our nervous system to reduce pain and for some people to increase function.

Picture 1: with a paralyzed right arm, the person refills a salt shaker using the grip available in the paralyzed arm by leveraging against the counter and pouring with the functional arm.

Picture 2: same style of picture with pepper being refilled.

This is a conversation that happened last night. The more I think about this conversation, the more I wish everyone would just talk about disabilities so that we as a society can grow but also so you, as an individual, can learn how to discuss it, which creates the inclusion and acceptance once levels of comfort are reached.

All I want for Christmas is to feel seen, understood and to be loved. This was a very comfortable conversation with a non-disabled cab driver.

Attractive feminine Lyft driver: ready?

Me: aren't you scared doing this at night?

Her: no, I have more problems in the day than at night.

Me: why?

Her: daytime rides are usually day drinkers or disabled people.

Me: why are disabled people hard?

Her: because they're perverted.

Me: hey! But also that's true. We talk about s*x a lot because we don't get it. I appreciate your honesty saying that though because everyone else likes to gaslight me in "astonishment" that it "can't possibly be true" making me feel invalidated on the last 10 years of my life. I'll tip you big just for not feeling the need to lie to me or pretend like I'm not disabled or act like it's appalling to talk about what is a very real existence.
