Dr. LeKeshia Harless Mathis’s new article, “How The Superwoman Schema Costs the African American Woman,” explores the cultural pressures on African American women to embody unwavering strength, resilience, and self-sufficiency, often at the expense of their mental and physical well-being. Drawing from her social work experience, Dr. Mathis outlines how the Superwoman Schema,
a theoretical framework describing the expectation to project strength, suppress vulnerability, and prioritize others, emerges from systemic racism, sexism, and cultural stereotypes, but leads to emotional suppression, isolation, stress, and chronic self-neglect.

This article highlights both the resilience fostered by these expectations and the significant health costs, calling for culturally sensitive interventions and increased awareness among mental health professionals to better support African American women’s holistic health.

Arizona Birthworkers of Color is an organization committed to fostering growth, community, and support for individuals of color engaged in birth-related professions throughout Arizona. During the celebration of Black Maternal Mental Health Week, I, Dr. Mathis, had the opportunity to discuss the critical importance of mental health. I highlighted that the journey to healing begins when individuals facing mental health challenges find the courage to voice their struggles and seek the necessary support without the burden of shame. This message underscores a significant cultural shift from perceiving silence as a form of strength to embracing a movement that encourages the acknowledgment of pain, advocates for appropriate care, and aims to reshape the narrative for future generations.

Intergenerational trauma refers to the transmission of trauma across generations, not just through stories or behaviors, but through deeply ingrained cultural, psychological, and even biological pathways. For Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, this often stems from historical events such as slavery, colonization, forced displacement, systemic racism, and ongoing structural inequities.

What makes this particularly complex is that these traumas are often unacknowledged or minimized, yet they continue to shape coping mechanisms, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships within families and communities. We see it manifest in elevated rates of depression, anxiety, substance use, and even mistrust of healthcare systems.

As mental health professionals, understanding intergenerational trauma is not just about cultural competence — it's about clinical responsibility. Our approaches to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment must consider this layered context to avoid pathologizing survival behaviors while creating more effective, culturally responsive interventions.

This week, I was honored to present on this topic at ASU’s 26th Annual Summer Institute where I explored this topic with other social workers, considering both the challenges and opportunities for healing in our work. I am so grateful to be able go speak on the topics I am passionate about and to conitnue to help enhance the mental health field, educating others on how to better serve those who western practices dont always benefit.
