Cold and Flu season is here, practicing good hygiene is key in preventing the spread of infectious disease including conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the clear tissue that sits on top of the white sclera, lining the front surface of the eye.
Symptoms of conjunctivitis:
Gritty, itchy or burning sensation in one or both eyes
Discharge from one or both eyes
Swollen eyelids
Redness or pink discoloration to the whites of the eyes
Increased light sensitivity
There are different causes of conjunctivitis some are more aggressive and contagious. Bacterial conjunctivitis is typically treated with antibiotic eyedrops. Viral conjunctivitis cannot be treated with antibiotics; it typically runs its course like the common cold. However, cool compresses and a hypoclorous solution are effective remedies.
Early consultation with your optometrist can help lead to a quicker resolution and reduce the likelihood of spreading the infection.
