I’ve met so many moms of autistic children and every single one of them is doing everything they can and more for their kids.

They’re battling insurance, navigating impossible systems, and showing up every day with love and determination.

And then they’re told: “It’s your fault. Your child is autistic because you took Tylenol while pregnant.”

That is not only untrue, it’s cruel.
Moms don’t need blame. They need systemic change, real supports, and a government that actually funds services instead of quietly pulling them away.

Because blaming moms isn’t just wrong—it’s a distraction from the real issue.

This week, I sat in an IEP meeting where a parent asked the school team a simple but powerful question: “Is my child’s ABA classroom truly neurodiversity affirming? Can you promise me there aren’t harmful practices happening?”

One staff member responded that many of their colleagues had just completed a training on neurodiversity affirming practices.

But here’s the thing, taking a training doesn’t automatically make someone neurodiversity affirming. It isn’t a certificate you hang on the wall or a box you check.

Being neurodiversity affirming is an ongoing promise. It’s a daily commitment to accept the child in front of you as they are and to build from their strengths. It’s the work of unlearning everything you were taught about disability and worth, and then waking up the next morning ready to do that work again.

It’s not a one-and-done achievement. It’s a way of showing up, every single day.

Transitions felt like the end of the world. That’s how it was for Sam, a bright 4-year-old boy I worked with in his preschool. Every time the class moved from one activity to the next…playground to classroom, circle time to centers, or even from something he didn’t like to something he did, Sam would fall apart. He screamed, dropped to the floor, and sometimes even lashed out in frustration.

At first, it looked like “behavior.” But what I came to understand was that Sam wasn’t misbehaving, he was overwhelmed. Transitions happened suddenly. He was often in the middle of his play when the teacher called out, “Time to line up!” and the shift felt abrupt and overwhelming.

Once we slowed things down and gave him support, everything changed.
💡 A visual schedule so he could see what was coming next.
💡 A predictable transition song that gave his brain a cue.
💡 Pointing out what his peers were doing so he had a clear model.
💡 And when possible, just a minute or two to finish his play plan before moving on.

With these supports, Sam began to feel prepared instead of blindsided. Transitions became smoother—for him, his teachers, and his friends.

👉 The truth is, transitions are tough for a lot of kids, especially at the start of the school year when routines are brand new. That’s why I created my Preschool Visual Schedule—a tool to help kids feel safe, prepared, and confident as they move through their day, at school or at home.

Because every child deserves to feel calm when the world shifts around them. 💛

With school starting, IEP season is in full swing. Many parents are reviewing goals, preparing for meetings, and wondering if their child’s plan truly reflects their strengths and needs.

This parent reached out for a caregiver consultation, and together we reviewed her son’s IEP, refined the goals, and made sure neurodiversity-affirming supports were included. Her email afterward made my whole week. 💛

Did you know? I offer caregiver consultations to families anywhere in the U.S. Whether you’re preparing for an IEP meeting, reviewing goals, or just wanting another set of eyes on your child’s supports, you don’t have to do it alone.

👉 Save this post for IEP season, or comment “CONSULT” to schedule your consultation today ❤️

Was inspired by ‘s newest podcast episode (everyone needs to listen to Let Them Lead btw).

I used to think that good therapy looked like CONSTANTLY modeling language. However, when we stop talking for just a minute and embrace silence, it leaves room for children to initiate and connect with us.

Most autistic children who are non or minimally speaking not only experience apraxia (difficulty planning and coordinating the movements needed for speech), but many also experience dyspraxia (difficulty planning and coordinating body movements). A lot of autistic children are inaccurately labeled as “clumsy”, “lazy”, or that they simply don’t understand simple directions or concepts. However, the “clumsiness” or “laziness” that we see at the surface level is not a behavior that needs to be “treated”, “extinguished”, or “shaped”. As therapists, in order to support our client’s speech and language, we need to ditch the behavioral approaches and start by supporting children where they ACTUALLY need support… at the whole body level.

A lot to unpack here! If you know me, you know that I ALWAYS presume competence. I always presume that a child not only can learn to communicate in a way that others will understand given the right tools and support, but I also presume that the way that a child is already communicating IS meaningful. When we join a child where they are and respect their interests and the way they like to play, we will ALWAYS build connection, language, and joy ❤️
