UNSUNG HERO AWARD – September 2025
Meet Owen Harkins.
The Dalai Lama once said, "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." For eleven-year-old Owen, this isn't just a quote—it's how he lives every single day.
Once at a Toy Drive raffle, Owen desperately wanted to win one of the items, but when he noticed his mom admiring a different item, he placed all his tickets in that raffle jar instead.
Recently, Owen offered to step away from karate—the sport he loves the most—because he worried the cost might be a burden.
His selflessness extends beyond family. Last year he bought gifts for all of his teachers with his own money. During lunchtime at school, Owen often offers his food to others with less.
One day on a car ride he spotted a person living on the side of the road. Owen asked his mom if the person was okay. After learning about the person's situation, he insisted they go back. They did, and Owen gave the person the money he was saving to buy himself a present.
These aren't isolated incidents of childhood sweetness—they represent who Owen is at his core, and model to all of us that kindness is always possible.
