During Certified Nursing Assistants Week, we recognize the inspiring contributions that our hospice and home health aides make every day. They are the true eyes, ears, and hands of our clinical teams, turning the everyday tasks that patients can’t do for themselves into opportunities to show compassion. Your patience and kindness in the little moments that you share with patients make such a tremendous difference in their lives, and we couldn’t be prouder of you.

For Heart Month we are focused on "The Heart of Hospice – What's your Why?" Meet one of our Nurses, Amy Cormier.

"Like many in the healthcare profession, I was feeling burnt out with bedside nursing. I dreaded going to work, but taking care of people is what I do! I have seen many things in my career, good and bad, but Covid has been a game-changer.

The changes due to Covid have truly rearranged patient care. With so much loss of life due to Covid or Covid related causes, end-of-life care has changed the most. Healthcare professionals are used to providing peace and comfort during a time of loss. Here in the South, we bring in the whole family! We hold hands, we hug each other, we cry together, but extreme PPE and isolation measures have stripped that away. Since last year I have been the only person at a dying patient's bedside too many times! They don't know my voice. They don't know my smell or my touch. It is beyond heartbreaking. No matter how good I am, I am not their family.

When I heard of this hospice opening, I knew it was the right transition for me. Since December, I have been able to help patients return to their homes where they can be surrounded by the ones they know and love.
It is truly an honor for me. I am thankful that in such a difficult time in history that I can still fulfill my calling of caring for people."

For Heart Month we are focused on "The Heart of Hospice – What's your Why?" Meet one of our Nurses, Rose Brooks.

"This is my why. To change my nursing career, all I had have ever done was work in Nursing Homes, and I loved that area. Then I switched to the hospital setting to care for patients, get them well, and send them home. In that setting, I saw so many patients coming in dying from one thing or another to have pain medications ordered and the nurse not wanting to give those meds thinking they are not in pain. I wanted to do more in my career. I wanted to see a different side of nursing, to help a patient who is dying and wanting to be home with loved ones. I wanted to help them die with dignity and pain-free. I wanted to make a difference in their and their family's lives. They let you in their homes, treat you like family, and trust you to care for them. I often get asked, 'Isn't it hard to do hospice?', and the answer is yes and no. Yes, because you get close to your patients and their families, and it hurts when they pass. No, because you did what they wanted, to pass at home with family by their side, pain-free, and with dignity. Making a difference in someone's life is my why for choosing hospice. I didn't know a year ago what I was in for, but would not change this path I have chosen."
