When Disagreement Becomes Violence — A Call For Compassion & Reflection 🩶
Something deeply troubling has happened. The murder of a PERSON…. A HUMAN — over politics, ideology, or disagreement is a fundamental breakdown of civility in our society. As mental health professionals, we feel this deeply, because violence is not an acceptable response to conflict.
What This Says About Us
• We live in a world where moral polarization is weaponized. Disagreement is no longer a chance for dialogue but grounds for dehumanization. Once someone becomes “the other,” empathy takes a backseat — and the cycle of hatred intensifies.
• The culture of “us vs. them” erodes trust. It damages our sense of community. When we believe people who think differently than we do are threats rather than humans, we lose shared safety and social cohesion.
• Emotional and mental toll. Incidents like this trigger fear, grief, anger, anxiety — not just among the victim’s family, but across connected communities, especially among those personally targeted by hate or political violence. Many are retraumatized.
What We All Can Do
1. Pause before we judge or lash out. Recognize when anger arises. Use it as a signal to slow down, reflect, and choose responses rather than impulses.
2. Seek dialogue over monologue. We don’t have to agree with everyone, but making space to listen helps rehumanize people we may see as “other.”
3. Hold ourselves and others accountable. It’s not enough to say disagreements exist — we have to reject violence as a strategy. Speak out when language crosses a line.
4. Protect your mental health. Limit exposure to inflammatory media or social media. Take breaks. Debrief with trusted friends or professionals.
Our Role as Mental Health Providers
• We strive to heal hearts and minds, especially after trauma. In moments like this, we offer support, processing spaces, and resources to help people move through anger, grief, or fear.
• We encourage empathy as a tool for wellness. Not because everyone must agree — but because we are all human beings with complex inner lives and vulnerabilities.
💙 May this moment be a wake-up — not to more division, but to the compassion and unity that truly build societies worth living in.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by what’s happening — anxious, angry, afraid — you’re not alone.
Let’s move forward together.
