Celebrating milestones on our pathway to progress! We’re one step closer to completion at the site of our upcoming Freestanding Emergency Department in Five Forks. This $23 million project at 2814 Woodruff Road will expand access to high-quality, 24/7 emergency care right here in our growing community. Check out the latest progress photos from the construction site and join us in looking forward to the opening in Spring 2026!

History made in the Palmetto State! Bon Secours is proud to celebrate the first BiPortal Endoscopic Spine cases ever performed in South Carolina — and the incredible team who made it happen! This cutting-edge, minimally invasive technique uses two small portals and a high-definition camera to access and treat the spine with greater precision and less disruption to tissue. The result? Smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery for patients. Congratulations to Dr. Earl Troup, his skilled OR team and support staff for bringing innovative care to our community!

Bon Secours is pleased to announce we have reached an agreement with UnitedHealthcare that keeps all Bon Secours providers and facilities in-network for our patients with UnitedHealthcare commercial (employer-sponsored), Medicare Advantage, Exchange and Veteran’s Affairs Community Care Network health plans, effective July 1.

We understand the possibility of Bon Secours being out-of-network with United has been challenging for our patients in Greenville, South Carolina and the surrounding Upstate and we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for their grace and support as we diligently worked through these negotiations.

We sought and achieved more equitable reimbursement increases from UnitedHealthcare and maintained our ability to provide compassionate care — because it’s critical our patients have access to the care they need, when they need it, and for us to receive equitable, market-competitive reimbursement to cover our costs.

We remain focused on continuing to invest in the health and well-being of our communities, while preserving our continued ability to provide compassionate and accessible care to patients. Having access to the providers you know and trust is critical for the health of our community, and we are grateful to our patients who entrust us with their care. We look forward to serving you for years to come.

At Bon Secours, we’ve proudly cared for families across the Upstate for generations. But right now, that care is at risk for some because health insurers are refusing to pay fairly for the care our community relies on every day.

Did you know that insurance companies deny 850 million claims every year nationwide? That’s 1 in 6 claims. These denials force patients to navigate confusing, time-consuming appeals processes. It’s no surprise, then, that only 1% of patients attempt to appeal, as those who do face hours of phone calls, mountains of paperwork, and an uphill battle against a system that’s stacked against them.

Greenville County residents know these frustrations well. Many in our community have recently faced out-of-network challenges and been forced to travel further or pay higher out-of-pocket costs because of health insurers’ decisions. It’s a cruel and unusual punishment that no one should endure when they’re simply trying to get, or stay, healthy.

While insurers rake in profits, hospitals are facing skyrocketing costs: prescription drugs up 15%, supplies up 13%, and labor up over 5% in the last year alone. And yet, insurers continue to cut corners, delay payments, and underpay some hospitals for the same services others are fully reimbursed for. That imbalance weakens our entire health care system.

We’re working tirelessly to negotiate with insurers — not for our own gain, but to protect your ability to access high-quality care close to home. Because this fight is about more than contracts. It’s about your health, your family, and the future of care in the Upstate.

We believe no one should be caught in the middle of a battle between hospitals and insurers. It’s time for insurance companies to step up, pay fairly, and help build a stronger, more resilient health care system for all of us.

“All of my doctors are very caring and listen to my concerns and work with me towards a solution,” says Janet C., whose entire care team includes providers from Bon Secours St. Francis Health System in Greenville, SC. They’ve helped support her along her and her husband’s health journeys. Janet recalls a time she relied on Bon Secours providers not only for herself but also when caring for her husband after a heart attack. She says, “Everyone at Bon Secours Eastside and Downtown Hospitals are very professional and caring. When he had his triple bypass, the nurse kept me informed as to the progress of the surgery. Everyone in the heart program was very helpful and reassuring to me.”

Because Janet is insured through UnitedHealthcare, the ongoing negotiations between United and Bon Secours are putting her established relationship with her care team at risk. “I am afraid that I will not be able to have the care that I am accustomed to should I have to find other doctors and hospitals.”

Janet’s concerns are mounting as the July 1 deadline approaches to reach agreement, or her Bon Secours providers could be considered out of network. “It will cost me more to see my doctors and since I am on Social Security, I cannot afford to pay more,” says Janet. As negotiations continue, she shares her plea to UnitedHealthcare to put patients first. “Please settle this as quickly as possible. I have to have some procedures done, and I will have to put them off if negotiations take much longer.”

If you’re a UnitedHealthcare patient in Upstate South Carolina and want to learn more about how you may be impacted by this negotiation and ways you can make your voice heard on the issue, visit our website at bonsecours.com/united-updates.

As of July 1, 2025, some patients with UnitedHealthcare insurance are still considered in network for Bon Secours providers in South Carolina.
