The SILC recognized Jim Hoxie, Spearfish resident, as the 2025 Champion for Independent Living Services Award recipient. Jim was nominated by Sandy Neyhart for his contributions for Independence and Inclusion.
Jim’s Contributions:
o Retired forester from Spearfish, SD, who became legally blind.
o Second career as an advocate for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
o Co-authored Grandpa’s White Cane (a children's book) with Joanna Jones.
o Delivered over 130 presentations across North America.
o Mentored individuals and trained others in disability awareness.

• Ken’s SuperFair Foods, Aberdeen – Outstanding Private Employer (Large);
• City of Belle Fourche, Belle Fourche – Outstanding Public Employer;
• Steve Hilton, Piedmont – Outstanding Transition Services; and
• Sandy Neyhart, Sturgis – Distinguished Service.
