SD Department of Health Trauma System

SD Department of Health Trauma System Vision Statement: All patients in South Dakota needing trauma services receive high quality, readily accessible, and well coordinated services.

Legislation enacted in 2008 enabled the Department of Health, with input from the Department of Public Safety, to develop, implement, and administer a trauma care system, including a statewide trauma registry, that involves all hospitals and emergency medical services within the state. The Department of Health is currently developing the statewide trauma system. A trauma system is an organized response to managing and improving the care of severely injured people. It spans the continuum-of-care from prevention, pre-hospital care, acute care to rehabilitation. It has been established to ensure that injured people are promptly transported to and treated at facilities appropriate to the severity of their injury. A trauma system also provides a foundation for disaster preparedness and response. As part of its day-to-day activities, a trauma system coordinates the movement and care of severely injured people.

Share Your Input: South Dakota Rural Health Transformation Opportunity

South Dakota has the chance to receive significant federal funding through the new Rural Health Transformation Program. This program was created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which established a $50 billion fund to help transform healthcare in rural communities nationwide.

The Office of the Governor will be submitting South Dakota’s plan, and your feedback will help shape the strategy. Your input is critical to ensuring that local voices and priorities guide how this funding is used to strengthen healthcare across our state.

The comment period is open now through September 22, 2025. Don’t miss this opportunity to make your voice heard.

Happy Nurses Week! Nurses wear many hats—and some of them help shape entire systems of care.

Meet Jamie Zilverberg, RN,BSN, and South Dakota’s Trauma System Manager. In her role, Jamie ensures patients across the state receive life-saving trauma care—coordinated from the scene of injury through recovery.

Although she no longer works at the bedside, her purpose remains the same: advocating for patients during their most critical moments. “The heart of why I became a nurse hasn’t changed,” she shares. “I’m able to support the systems that help save lives every day.”

From frontline care to system-wide impact—nurses do it all.
