What is a resident physician and residency?

A residency provides the supervised experience that doctors must have after graduating medical school to become board-certified doctors in their specialty. Our residents are training to become fully certified family medicine doctors. They’ve already graduated medical school and have worked for one year at the Sioux Falls Family Medicine Residency. They are licensed in South Dakota and are now spending two more years in Pierre, working under the supervision of experienced doctors. Once they graduate from the Pierre Rural Family Medicine Residency, they go on to practice independently at a location of their choosing. Most of the time they decide to stay in Pierre. πŸ˜ƒ

Resident doctors duscuss patients with a certified family doctor (also called a faculty or attending doctor). If your health problem is complicated, or if you are in the hospital, the faculty doctor will see you in person, too. Faculty and resident physicians learn from each other, so don’t be surprised if we ask permission for another physician to look at a rash or listen to a heart murmur.

By being a patient here at Pierre Rural Family Medicine Residency, you’re helping to train new doctors for small-town family medicine. You also benefit from being part of a clinic that is always learning and using the most up-to-date medical practices and developments.

Our clinic is located on the second floor of the Avera Medical Clinic. You can call 605-945-5200 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Brosnan, Dr. Dague, Dr. Lowes or Dr. Jensen.

Dr. Freeman is one of our first year residents completing her training in Sioux Falls right now. She moved here for two great reasons:

✌🏼. More hunting

Last week we traveled to Sioux Falls to practice procedures and patient case scenarios. Faculty from our sister program in Sioux Falls join to help out with the teaching.
It comes with the added bonus of team bonding during the trip there and back. This trip covered topics including Midwest geography, Army fitness testing, hospice, sleep apnea and cardiac echoes to name a few. Everyone learned something new!
