The Avera Cancer Institute in Pierre has added advanced surface-guided radiation therapy technology — bringing even greater precision, safety and comfort to cancer care close to home. Using real-time 3D camera tracking, the system helps ensure radiation is delivered exactly as planned and pauses treatment if movement occurs, protecting healthy tissue along the way.

This marks the first time this technology has been available at an Avera location outside of Sioux Falls. It’s another step forward in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care right here in Pierre.

Mariah Block, Jada Tschetter and Ruby Hawks, three USD School of Medicine students who participated in the Frontier and Rural Medicine (FARM) program, brought life-saving skills to incarcerated mothers through their Class of 2027 Community Project, “Maternal Health Behind Bars.”

Through trauma-informed CPR and choking-response training, they helped mothers gain confidence and preparedness to care for their babies. We thank Mariah, Jada and Ruby for their dedication and compassion during their time in Pierre, and we wish them all the best as they complete their studies and continue on in their medical careers!
