More than 2 in 5 U.S. adults have prediabetes, and most don’t know it. Yet type 2 diabetes is largely preventable with the right support. Prediabetes means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range, and this stage is a powerful window for prevention through healthy eating, physical activity, and modest weight loss.
That’s where diabetes prevention programs come in. CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs have been shown to cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by about half (and by even more for older adults) by helping participants build sustainable habits, not quick fixes.
Today for National Public Health Week, we’re celebrating Amani Nicol Wellness, the first local hub for CDC-recognized Diabetes Prevention Programs in our area. Founded by Baltimore City native Nik Sweeney, Amani Nicol Wellness is a community-rooted leader delivering high-quality, evidence-based diabetes prevention right where people live, work, and play. This turns education, coaching, and peer support into real protection against diabetes for our community.
