Barefoot Birthkeeper Information about natural birth and holistic health geared to help people make informed decisions about their bodies, babies, and families.

In 2011 I became a mother for the third and fourth time simultaneously. I had my twins at home and it was the best decision I ever made! That experience jettisoned me on the path I am on today, helping pregnant people have their best birth experience!

Hello hello!!

Long time, no post!

It’s been a whirlwind these past almost 2 years! Between my midwifery apprenticeship (oy), midwifery school (graduated, woot woot!), and falling pregnant. With twins. AGAIN. 😂

But don’t worry, I’m back now! And with news! I have decided to blend my three biggest passions: Birth work, healing work, and spiritual work. And to that end, I have created Wise Ways, where I will be sharing all things about holistic health & wellness, fertility & the childbearing year, and spirituality.

Please head on over and give us a like to stay connected!

And let me know if you have any burning questions to answer or topics to cover!

Until next post!

No matter your birth plan, dads, you CAN positively impact mom and baby. Be her peace, yes. Her supporter, yup. Her advocate, now that’s just sexy! We asked ...

And some men to.

I was talking about my upcoming hormone book with my oldest daughter and she said, “mama, make sure you include a section on chronic pelvic pain, so many of my friends have it.” And she was right: most women experience some days of pain each month. But it’s not meant to be this way. There are many causes of pelvic and period pain, endo being one of them. And while pharmaceuticals help in the short run, none are sustainable solutions and some carry risks.

Pelvic, period & endo pain share some ‘under the hood’ causes including inflammation and fatigue. And there are natural solutions that have been shown to help. So how do you get to the root causes and feel better?

🌟 Eat an anti-inflammatory diet rich in organic veggies. Processed foods, added sugars, poor quality oils, artificial ingredients & artificial sweeteners cause inflammation - fruits, veggies, and omega-3 rich fish reduce/reverse it.
🌟 Stress + trauma can cause pain, and keep it ‘locked in”. Healing thru EMDR, somatic therapy, and daily practices that reduce stress – i.e. yoga, meditation, dancing & journaling- can help you get out of survival mode and feel better in your body.
🌟 Not getting enough good quality sleep can increase the amount of period pain you experience and reduce your ability to cope with it. Poor sleep also leads to inflammation due to disruption in circadian rhythm and cortisol cycles. How much sleep? 7-8 hrs/night.
🌟 Pain and inflammation manifest through the nervous + immune systems. Cool inflammation with herbs like turmeric + ginger, and ease pain with herbs like cramp bark, peppermint oil capsules, Jamaican dogwood, corydalis + CBD oil orally or as a vag. suppository. Healing baths with essential oils of lavender, rose, or clary sage can also relieve pain, while relaxing mind + mood.

We’ve been conditioned to reach for a pill or jump to surgery, and while these can be mind-blowingly helpful, they don’t get under the hood and to the roots. So even when turning to those valuable therapies, healing our whole terrain can shift us out of underlying imbalances that ultimately lead to other challenges. Teenagers choose home birth too. 🌿

This is the look of a new, young family just several minutes after giving birth.

No fear. No trauma. Not stressed.
Empowered! Happy! Proud!

This momma educated herself and was determined to do everything she could to stay low risk. She made excellent choices for their health, even when it was hard. Her mother and partner supported her fully.

She was incredible! Her baby was incredible. They worked together as she instinctually pushed her baby down through her pelvis for nearly 3 hours.
As baby was emerging, she had a significant shoulder dystocia that was quickly released. This sweet baby was nearly 10 lbs and had 16.5” shoulders. Mom didn’t even tear. Baby’s clavicles were in tact. It was all beautiful.

"It's so important to have images to support the truth that the cord, placenta and baby are one unit. The umbilical cord does not need to be cut, ever. The cord will dry and become like rawhide in the days following birth and eventually will just "sproing" off the baby and, voila, there's the belly button." - Midwife Gloria Lemay

I have signed up and you should too! I'm so glad people are finally waking up and realizing that one of the main culprits of disease is our lack of connection and community!
