Now that the school is officially underway, it is easy to focus on assignments, schedules, and routines. Although those are each important, it is just as important to check in on how your child is feeling emotionally. Big changes can bring big feelings especially for kids who are sensitive, anxious, or have trouble with focus and regulation.

Your child may not always have the words to express stress or overwhelm. Instead, it can show up as irritability, tiredness, withdrawal, or even physical symptoms like stomachaches or headaches. Paying attention to these early signs can help you support your child before challenges begin to build.

If your child is struggling to adjust or needs extra support, we are here to help. Every child deserves to feel safe, capable, and understood. We are here for you!

As the school year begins, some children may experience more than just first day nerves. School anxiety can show up in many ways, through physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches, emotional changes like fearfulness or irritability, and behavioral signs such as homework avoidance or refusing to go to school.

These struggles are real and can quickly grow without support. Early intervention can make all the difference in helping children feel safe, understood, and prepared to succeed.

We are here to help families recognize the signs of school anxiety and take proactive steps to support their child’s mental and emotional well being.

If your child is showing signs of school related stress, now is the time to reach out. Together, we can build a foundation for a stronger, more confident school year.

Too much screen time does more than just keep kids indoors. It can affect mood, behavior, sleep, and emotional regulation. When children spend large amounts of time on digital devices, they may become more irritable, anxious, distracted, or withdrawn.

The constant stimulation from apps, games, and videos can overwhelm the brain and make it harder to focus, relax, or cope with everyday challenges. It can also reduce time spent on healthy activities like play, conversation, outdoor time, and rest.

As a parent, you do not need to remove screens completely. But creating balance is essential. Set limits, build screen free zones at home, and talk to your child about how screen time makes them feel before and after.

Our staff at Compassion Behavioral Health Services can help families build healthy tech habits and support emotional wellness. A few small changes now can lead to better mental health and stronger relationships.

Digital addiction can be easy to overlook, especially when screen time feels like a normal part of daily life. But when device use starts to interfere with your child’s mood, behavior, and ability to function, it may be time to take a closer look.

Common signs of digital addiction in children include:
• Extreme irritability when asked to stop using a device
• Sneaking screen time or lying about usage
• Loss of interest in other activities they used to enjoy
• Trouble sleeping or staying asleep
• Declining grades or difficulty focusing on tasks
• Withdrawing from friends or family
• Constant thoughts about gaming, videos, or social media

These signs do not mean your child is lazy or disobedient. They are often signals that your child is overwhelmed, overstimulated, or using screens to cope with stress or discomfort.

Early intervention is key. Set clear boundaries, build in healthy routines, and talk openly with your child about their feelings and habits.

If you need support, Compassion Behavioral Health Services is here to help. If your child is a current patient, talk with their medication management provider or therapist about your concerns. Not a patient? No problem! Call us at 606-888-7337 to schedule an intake appointment. Together, we can guide your child toward healthier patterns and stronger emotional well being.

Doomscrolling is the habit of endlessly scrolling through negative or distressing content online, and it is becoming more common in children and teens, especially those with ADHD.

Kids with ADHD are more likely to become stuck in repetitive behaviors, and doomscrolling can quickly turn into a cycle that is difficult to break. What begins as checking the news or social media can turn into hours of exposure to content that increases anxiety, fear, or hopelessness.

For children with ADHD, this kind of digital overload can increase symptoms like emotional reactivity, trouble sleeping, and difficulty focusing. It can also affect their mental health by feeding into worry and stress without offering any sense of control or support.

Parents and caregivers can help by setting digital boundaries, talking regularly about what their child is seeing online, and encouraging healthier alternatives like physical activity, creative play, or spending time with others in person.

We understand how screen use can impact emotional wellness. If you are noticing changes in your child’s behavior or mood, we are here to help. Awareness is the first step. Support is available when you need it.

Digital addiction is a growing concern for families, and with the start of the school year, now is the time to recognize the signs and take action.

When screen time starts to impact your child’s mood, sleep, relationships, or motivation, it may be more than just a habit. It could be a sign of digital dependency. Some common signs include constant preoccupation with screens, anger or distress when devices are removed, avoiding responsibilities, or withdrawing from activities they once enjoyed.

Addressing this issue takes more than simply taking the device away. Yelling or expecting a child to quit immediately can increase resistance and anxiety. Instead, take a calm and consistent approach. Set clear screen time limits, offer choices for alternate activities, and get involved by modeling healthy screen habits yourself.

Let your child know you care and want to support them, not punish them. Plan device free family time, help them reconnect with outdoor play, and create a routine that includes tech free moments throughout the day.

The staff at Compassion Behavioral Health Services understands how overwhelming this issue can feel. You are not alone. If screen time is becoming a struggle in your home, we are here to help your family find balance and connection. Change is possible with the right support.
