This week, Billie Jo Russell, CNO and Interim CEO of Iron County Medical Center, participated as a speaker at the National Rural Health Association Access Conference in San Diego alongside rural healthcare leaders from across the Delta Region, including representatives from Sparta Community Hospital and Washington County Memorial Hospital.

During the panel discussion led by Suzanne Eslyn and Jennifer Ha from HRSA’s Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, Billie Jo shared Iron County Medical Center’s experiences through the Delta Region Community Health Systems Development Program (DRCHSD) and DSIP grant initiatives focused on strengthening rural healthcare access and sustainability.

The presentation highlighted how Iron County Medical Center utilized grant funding to strengthen quality infrastructure, expand care coordination efforts, and develop a new accredited sleep lab service line within the hospital. Through this project, local patients who previously had to travel outside the county for sleep studies are now able to receive specialty diagnostic services close to home.

The discussion also focused on the unique challenges rural hospitals face, including workforce shortages, limited specialty access, chronic disease burdens, and operational sustainability, while demonstrating how strategic partnerships, innovation, and federal support programs can help rural healthcare organizations build long-term solutions for their communities.

Iron County Medical Center is proud to be part of national conversations focused on improving rural healthcare access, strengthening local healthcare systems, and supporting healthier communities across southeast Missouri.

As if we’d skip the 90s! It’s our final decade in this Hospital Week journey through time, and we’re throwing it back to an era of major medical breakthroughs and bold innovation!

Fun fact: In 1998, the world’s first successful hand transplant was performed; a remarkable milestone that showed just how far medicine had come. 🖐️✨

The 90s helped shape the modern healthcare we know today, but one thing has never changed: the heart of healthcare is the incredible people behind it. Thank you to our healthcare heroes for continuing to bring compassionate care, innovation, and dedication to our community every day!

🌼 Groovy, baby! It’s 1970s day for Hospital Week! Today we’re throwing it back to a decade of bold patterns, disco, and big advances in healthcare.

Fun fact: the very first CT scan debuted in 1971, changing medicine forever by helping doctors see inside the body in an entirely new way! In 1978, the world’s first IVF baby was born, an incredible breakthrough that changed countless lives.

We may not have been around in the 70s, but we’re grateful for the innovations that paved the way and for the amazing healthcare heroes who keep that spirit of progress going every day.
