March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Colorectal Cancer is a malignancy that develops in the colon or re**um and is a major cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early detection through screening and awareness of symptoms significantly improves treatment outcomes.
Risk Factors / Causes:
• Increasing age (risk rises significantly after 45 years)
• Family history of colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps
• Diet high in processed and red meats
• Low dietary fiber intake
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Obesity
• To***co use and excessive alcohol consumption
• Certain inflammatory bowel conditions
Common Clinical Symptoms:
• Persistent change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of stool)
• Re**al bleeding or blood in stool
• Unexplained iron-deficiency anemia
• Abdominal pain, cramping, or discomfort
• Unintentional weight loss
• Persistent fatigue or weakness
Preventive Measures:
• Maintain a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
• Engage in regular physical activity
• Limit intake of red and processed meats
• Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
• Maintain a healthy body weight
• Undergo routine screening (such as colonoscopy or stool-based tests) beginning at age 45 or earlier for individuals with higher risk
