I’ve received several messages and conversations on this issue. So here are my thoughts:
The nursing profession has suffered a serious setback at the hands of the current administration with the dismissal of nursing as a professional degree. At a time when the health of Arkansans and Americans nationwide continues to decline, it is difficult to find confidence in the promise of the “Big Beautiful Bill” to restore health and wellness for all. Nurses and nurse practitioners play a critical role in closing the gaps in access to care, particularly in rural communities and within an already overburdened healthcare system.
Restricting funding for aspiring nurses and nurse practitioners will have far reaching consequences that extend well beyond my generation and those that follow. Attempts to narrowly define or devalue professional degrees echo the barriers imposed on women and minorities in the 1960s and represent a renewed threat to equitable access to education and to the healthcare workforce our nation so urgently needs today.
I implore my fellow and future colleagues across the nation to petition the United States Department of Education. Join your professional organizations and let’s work together to continue doing the work for the greater good.
Add your name to ANA's petition for nursing to be included in the definition of 'professional degree' programs.
