I met and had dinner with two brilliant transplant surgeons and researchers. Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin performed the first successful pig to human heart transplant! This is also known as xenotransplantation. Dr. Hawthorne, from Sydney Australia, has performed over 700 pancreatic islet cell transplants in those diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

I’ve been in nerd mode lately, reading, and researching. I came across this interesting story about Lavar Ball and his recent complications with diabetes. He is the father of the NBA Ball brothers. Despite his celebrity status, this article is very relatable and I thought I would share. The take away from this article is Prevention! Take a few minutes to read this article, it might just help you save your limbs…..

LaVar Ball revealed that complications with his diabetes ultimately led to his leg needing amputation, saying it could have all been prevented.

UAMS Solid Organ Transplant now has 5 transplant surgeons! We also now offer kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants. We have expanded our services by meeting patients right where they are in their communities and by partnering with the local hospitals who oftentimes provide stabilizing care until the transfer to UAMS can happen. In order to see change you have to be the catalyst for change. I work at both the Little Rock and Pine Bluff UAMS locations to serve not only my state but my local community.
