Mrs. Vetory Davis

Vetory, lovingly known as Vickie, was born on August 22, 1931, in Star City, Arkansas, to Lettie
B. Maddox and Richard Maddox. She was the youngest of two siblings and shared a close and
enduring bond with her brother, Theodis, which lasted until his passing. Growing up during the
Great Depression, Vetory faced significant barriers, as most Black children at the time were
unable to attend school due to the period's constraints.

Vetory began her educational journey at a family church school near Bayou Bartholomew before
transferring to a two-room schoolhouse on Mr. Pinchback’s plantation. There, she learned her
ABCs, as well as how to write, spell, and read. Her commitment to education was evident as she
walked two miles and crossed the bayou by boat each day, with the help of a family friend, to
ensure she never missed her lessons.

Encouraged by her teacher, Vetory’s parents supported her attendance at Dunbar High School in
Little Rock, Arkansas. To pay for her tuition, room, and board, she worked for two sisters who
taught at Dunbar, applying the cooking skills she learned from her mother. These experiences
fostered her financial independence at young age.

Before earning her college degree, Vetory worked at the Del Monte Canning Factory in
California to save for tuition and clothes. She eventually returned home to begin her professional
career. After graduating from college, she became a Typing and Shorthand teacher in West
Memphis, Arkansas, before relocating to Los Angeles, California, where she met her late
husband, Mr. Nelson Davis.

Vetory earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from AM&N, now the
University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). She furthered her education at Texas Woman’s
University in Denton, Texas, where she received her Master of Library Science degree. Vetory
later became a tenured librarian at UAPB after 32 years of service.

Ms. Davis devoted 68 years of service to Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. She was an
active member, serving on numerous committees and holding various leadership roles, including
Anti-Basilus, Basilus, chairperson of the “Buds of Spring” Pageant, Financial Basilus, and
Advisor to the Undergraduate Chapter, Alpha Chi. She was honored with several awards,
including recognition at the International Boule in Detroit, Michigan, for 50 years of service in
2008.

Vetory was an enthusiastic traveler, journeying across most states in the U.S. with family,
sorority members and The Traveling Friends group. She also traveled to Jerusalem with a
combined group of people from various states. Despite challenges like jet lag, she discovered
routines that allowed her to enjoy traveling. Her passion for reading was contagious, and she
often recommended books and articles, inspiring those around her. She was known for her sense
of humor, love of laughter, dancing, singing, and her ability to make others laugh.
Among her greatest joys were her three children: Spencer, Renay, and Pat. Vetory cherished
motherhood and spent quality time instilling values of love, courage, and generosity in her
children.

Vetory’s legacy of generosity, warmth, strength, independence, courage, love, and faith will
transcend generations. Her impact will continue to be felt through her family, who will carry her
legacy with pride and grace.

Vetory is survived by her son, Spencer (Vera) Brown; daughters, Renay (Kenny) Fleming and
Patricia (Charles) Thomas; first cousins, Debra (Don) Carter, Gladys Jones, and Reola (Anton)
Taylor; grandchildren, Quincy Thomas, Brian Thomas, Chelsea Thomas, and Breanna Fleming;
great-granddaughter, Amiyah Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Brown Funeral Home Pine Bluff, AR. Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Mt. Pleasant A.M.E. Church Pine Bluff, AR by Pastor Johnny Orr. Interment in Cypress Memorial Garden Pine Bluff, AR by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff, AR. Her body will lie in-state from 10:15 a.m. until service time.

Remembering and Sharing Stories

On this Mother’s Day weekend, one of the kindest things we can do for our hearts is to tell the stories that keep our mothers’ memories alive. Share a favorite recipe, a funny moment, or a piece of wisdom she passed down. Every story keeps her light shining.

“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.” – Philippians 1:3

“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”

If you would like, share a favorite memory or photo of your mother in the comments so we can remember her with you.

Comfort for Those Who Are Grieving

As Mother’s Day approaches, many in our community are quietly grieving the loss of a mother, grandmother, or mother‑figure. Your tears, memories, and mixed emotions are all valid. Grief is a sign of deep love, not weakness.

Scripture:
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.” – Psalm 34:18

“A mother’s hug may last only a moment, but her love lasts a lifetime.”

Brown Funeral Home is here to walk beside you with care and compassion, especially on days like these.

Mrs. Bessie Marie Ford was born on August 27, 1960, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Reverend Gabe “G.L.” Lee Ford, Jr. and the late Mildred (Johnson) Ford. On Friday, May 1, 2026, God gently called His beloved daughter home as she rested peacefully—just as she would have wanted—bringing her earthly journey to a close and welcoming her into eternal rest.

Bessie was raised in Star City, Arkansas, where she graduated from Star City High School in 1978. With determination and quiet strength, she continued her education at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, proudly following in the footsteps of her siblings. While there, she earned an internship with the Department of Defense, setting the stage for a remarkable career. After graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, she began her professional journey at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Through hard work, dedication, and excellence, Bessie rose through the ranks from a GS-4 to a GS-11, ultimately retiring as a respected Production Management Specialist in 2022.

Bessie’s life was anchored in her faith. At an early age, she confessed her hope in Christ and was baptized by her father, as only he would have it—a moment that shaped her spiritual journey. After moving to Oklahoma, she joined Christian Life Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. Jayel Jacobs. There, she flourished spiritually and joyfully served in the choir, finance team, Sweet Spirit Ministry, and wherever her hands were needed. Bessie played a vital role in fostering a strong bond between Christian Life and Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church, creating a lasting fellowship that united both congregations as one extended family.

Following her retirement, Bessie fulfilled a long-held dream of returning home to Tarry, Arkansas. With faith and excitement, she reunited with her roots and her family. Once home, she joined Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Clarence Holman. True to who she was, she immediately became active, lifting her voice in the choir and serving through the Good Shepherd Ministry. Even as her health began to decline, her spirit of service, kindness, and devotion never wavered.

Bessie will be remembered for her warm heart, her unwavering faith, her dedication to family, and her willingness to serve others with love and humility. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures—especially the comfort of home, where she could rest, reflect, and just be at peace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Dr. G.L. and Mildred Ford; her grandparents, Milton and Ophelia Johnson, and Gabe Sr. and Alice Ford; and her brother, Samuel Atkinson.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her brothers, Cleo (Ruby) Ford of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Mark (Louise) Ford of Star City, Arkansas; her sister, Dorothy Jones of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; her sister-in-love, Shirley Atkinson of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; her special friend, William Belcher of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and dear friends whose lives she touched so deeply.

Though she is no longer with us in body, her light, her laughter, and her love will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 2704 Commerce Circle, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 2121 West 26th Avenue, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, officiated by Dr. Clarence Holman.

Mr. Monte Coleman, a beloved man of God, husband, father, athlete and coach, peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home on April 26, 2026.

Born on November 4, 1957 in Pine Bluff, AR, Monte lived a life defined by strength, discipline, and unwavering faith. He attended Union Baptist Church where he gave his life to Christ at an early age. He walked on at the University of Central Arkansas, where his brother Sam played, after graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1975. He started as a safety, helping the Bears reach the 1976 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship game and later went on to become the first UCA Bear to be drafted into the NFL.

He rose to national prominence as a linebacker for the Washington Redskins where he dedicated 16 remarkable seasons. During his distinguished career, Monte was a key contributor to a championship era, playing in four Super Bowls and winning three establishing himself as one of the most dependable and resilient players of his time.

Known throughout the NFL as “Superman”, Monte never sought the spotlight, yet his presence was deeply felt by teammates, coaches, and fans alike. He was respected for his consistency, toughness, and quiet leadership—qualities that made him a cornerstone of every team he served.

Following his NFL career, Monte was active at Christ Fellowship Church in Herndon, VA. He continued to live a life of purpose and service and later returned back to his home town in Pine Bluff, AR. There, he joined the UAPB football program where he eventually made his way to Head Coach and led the team to the 2012 SWAC Championship, the first victory in the history of the school.

He served in later years as the executive director of S.O.A.R., which focuses on equipping students and building character both in the classroom and in life.

While coaching, he faithfully served as an Assistant Pastor at Pine Bluff First Assembly, dedicating his life to ministry, mentorship, and sharing the Word of God. His faith was not merely spoken—it was lived daily and demonstrated through his actions.

His personal passions included family time, fishing, hunting and golfing. He even owned a bait and tackle shop in Virginia called “Monte Coleman’s I’d Rather Be Fishing.”

Monte was preceded in death by his parents, John Coleman and Jettie Mae Wiseman, his brother, Sam Coleman and brother-in-law Greg Carter.

He leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy: his devoted wife of 38 years, Yvette Coleman; his five children; Corey Coleman, Londie Coleman, Jasmine Ford (Terrence), Kyndall White (Gene), Kyle Coleman (Jamie). His ten grandchildren: Tavian, Vyctoria, Jace, Jaelle, Jensen, Karter, Zyra, Kamren, Kash and Mila; his siblings: Wayne Coleman (Janice), Paulette McDonald (Wyvonne), Cedric Coleman (Michelle), Bernard Coleman (Sheila), Lorne; Sister in laws: Cassandra Coleman, Aneva Carter; Brother-in-law Brian Morton (Kim). And a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Extended Family, Dear Friends and the countless lives he impacted on and off the field.
