The Center for Awareness and Hope LLC

The Center for Awareness and Hope LLC Private provider offering individual & group therapy to children and adults. Specializing in a mindfulness-based psychotherapy called DBT.

I specialize in mood disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, personality disorders and trauma. I help individuals find emotional balance by changing the self-destructive patterns that are getting in the way of their happiness. I teach my clients how to understand and better manage their emotions and, as a result, make choices that will enhance their lives. My therapeutic style is nonjudgmental, compassionate and interactive. I utilize a form of cognitive therapy called DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) that gives individuals the "skills" to create the life they want. I recognize the difficulty of change but I also believe a happy, fulfilling life is possible for all of us. I understand how difficult living with emotional distress can be and I am fully committed to helping my clients get better. If you are ready to make lasting changes and start living your life without self-imposed limits, email or call for a free phone consultation. I look forward to hearing from you.

THE HARDENING AND THE HATE

The first time the world breaks your heart
the shock is overwhelming
you learn, quite quickly
that life is cruel and often unfair
and so the hardening starts.

The next time the world breaks your heart
you get angry
at yourself
for not seeing it approach
and so the self-hatred begins.

As life goes on, you harden and you hate yourself
more and more
with every heartbreak that comes.

You harden and you hate
you hate and you harden…

And you don’t even see how your own cruelty
towards your self
is causing you even more pain
than the world itself.

How to end this cycle?

You soften, and you love.
You love and you soften…

And you know
that pain will always come
but there’s no need to make that worse
by joining in.

Neuroplasticity - the ability for the brain to change throughout our life - can be the reason we suffer but it can also be the reason we heal, grow, and flourish. We live in an exciting time in which we understand that, despite our past or present circumstances, we have significant control over our own happiness.

Short video on a new therapy I'm trained in that helps people who have tendency towards being over-controlled and rigid. For example, social anxiety, OCD, treatment resistant depression, anorexia, over-controlled/perfectionistic personality (OCPD). I would be happy to answer any questions you may have!

A brief introduction about the problem of overcontrol and a new approach to treating difficult to treat disorder by applying radical openness

Do you, or someone you know, have a terrible fear of vomiting? The clinical term for this fear is Emetophobia and it can be debilitating. I am starting a group to help those with this fear using a combination of proven therapies - CBT, RO-DBT, mindfulness, behavior modification and more. This group will also be very helpful for those who avoid or restrict certain foods and those with a fear of choking. If interested, or if you have any questions, please contact me at (973) 222-7863 or avafrotton@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you!

Self-esteem is often tied to our achievements and can fluctuate. Self-compassion, on the other hand, is a skill we can practice and improve on, and the benefits to our life are enduring. Contact me if you'd like to work on being more self-compassionate. I have some great resources I can pass along!
