Beyond the Stigma: Understanding Self-Injury š§”
Self-injury is often misunderstood as "attention-seeking," but for most, it is a deeply private struggle used to cope with overwhelming emotional pain.
Why it happens:
š§ Emotional Regulation: Turning "invisible" internal pain into something visible and "manageable."
š§ Breaking Numbness: A way to "feel something" when struggling with dissociation.
āļø Self-Punishment: A manifestation of intense guilt or self-hatred.
It is a survival mechanismābut there are safer ways to survive.
March is Self-Harm Awareness Month. šļø At WayFare Counseling, we want to break the silence and the shame. If you or someone you love uses self-injury to cope, please know that it is a sign of deep distress, not a character flaw. Understanding the "why" is the first step toward healing. You are not alone, and your pain deserves a voice that doesn't hurt.
