"If somebody's bleeding, just take a tamp..." No, stop it right now.
It's great that in many modern trauma classes, a student will invariably bring up tampons as an alternative to other means of controlling bleeding from trauma, such as gunshot or stab wounds. We say great, because it's normally brought up in a joking fashion.
Unfortunately, this is a persistent myth that still finds a way to rear its head periodically across social media, and perhaps even into some training classes (not ours).
Let's set the record straight. Tampons are designed to absorb, not stop. Our goal in controlling massive hemorrhage is to STOP the bleeding. Tourniquets stop bleeding. Wound packing stops bleeding. Direct pressure stops bleeding.
We won't go into all the details, but if you want to read a myriad of papers and articles explaining the "why" behind this, a simple Google search will certainly fill your cup. bit.ly/45a2tzp
The bottom line? Take the tampons out of your first aid kits, and learn how to control bleeding with pressure, tourniquets, and wound packing. If you're looking for a place to learn, we got you covered. 😉
