Let’s figure out how to get it in!

150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week is the recommended amount for a healthy heart. But this is one case where more might be better. Research showed that adults who exercised two to four times the recommended amount might lower their risk of dying by as much as 31%.

After you wake from surgery, it is likely that you experience a significant amount of pain. Typically, the pain resolves rather quickly and within six hours of surgery, most patients are able to walk a short distance. Getting up and walking early is one of the most important things that you can do to speed your recovery. Most patients begin to feel substantially better after they get up and walk. Well run bariatric programs will be very aggressive in getting you up and moving within a few hours of surgery. Patients who walk soon after surgery have a lower the chance of complications like blood clots in the legs or lungs and are typically ready for discharge sooner than those patients who do not start to walk shortly after surgery.

Pain control is typically managed through a combination of drugs. There is a growing interest in using non-narcotic medications like Toradol, IV Tylenol and Neurontin to minimize the amount of narcotics that postoperative patients require. Narcotics make people nauseated, constipated and can easily lead to addiction. The less narcotics patients use after surgery, the faster, easier the recovery.

I offer my patients ice chips and sugar free popsicles the night of surgery, however, some surgeons do not. The morning after surgery, I advance to sugar free clear liquids, including Jello and broth. Most patients are able to sip these drinks slowly throughout the day without significant nausea or discomfort.

Most of my patients are able to go home around 24-36 hours after their surgery. Patients who have their procedure later in the day often need to stay for a total of two nights after surgery, while those who have their surgery earlier in the morning often only require one night in the hospital. The criteria for discharge are the ability to keep down liquids, good pain control and a normal clinical course after surgery. Most surgeons work to get their patients out of the hospital as quickly as possible, both for your comfort, and to prevent complications after surgery.

We all experience cravings throughout our lives for certain foods: maybe it’s the pizza in the break-room or the sweet coffee drink from your favorite coffee shop. These cravings can be so strong and all-consuming that it may feel like you have no choice but to give in, despite your best efforts to avoid them.

Here’s the thing about cravings: they come like waves. They build larger and larger at first and then they crash and return to baseline. We don’t have control over when they come but we do have control over how we react to them.

The next time a craving wave builds, become a surfer. Rather than allowing the craving to wash over you and engulf you, try these tactics for riding it out:

1.) Try to view the craving wave with interest, rather than judgment. Cravings are a natural part of life and do not need to be chastised, judged or feared.

2.) Try to notice the predictable increase in strength and intensity of the wave followed by the predictable return to neutral without reacting or giving in to it.

3.) Distract yourself from the craving: Go for a walk, run an errand, clean something, or work on a hobby project. Whatever you choose, distracting yourself from the immediate pull of the craving can lessen the pull the craving has on you.

4.) Recognize how you feel after the wave has subsided: did anything bad happen when you didn’t give into the craving? How do you feel now?

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! Like real surfing, surfing our cravings takes practice and you may fall a few times! Don’t beat yourself up, the more you practice the more confident you’ll become!

What are your most stubborn cravings? What strategies do you use to fight them off?
