What I enjoy most about my job is hearing the transformative narratives patients share in how hearing aids have changed their life.

I love hearing stories of someone who once withdrew and is now keeping up in conversations with their grandkids. Or the nurse who has a new-found energy at work because her hearing aids eased her listening fatigue. 💕

Hearing aids are not a cure for tinnitus, however they have been shown to help reduce your brain’s perception of it!

The concept behind this is called “masking”. When a patient is fit with appropriate amplification, the brain is gaining access to sounds it was previously missing.

Generally, this allows the brain to focus on more exciting auditory information (aka speech!) and focus less on the tinnitus. Now I call that a two for one special! Thankfully, there are also other amazing resources in our toolbox to help patients with tinnitus.

[It’s all about that bass]—If you’re a big fan of the “head-banging” effect of music, use the equalizer on your device to turn up the bass. Even by turning down the volume, you’ll still get the nice jam session effect!

Tip #3:
🎧[Choose noise-canceling headphones]—This is particularly important if you enjoy listening to your device in noisy environments (airplane or bus). Without realizing it, you may dial up the volume in your headphones to overcome the noise around you.

Patient: “On a scale of 1 to 10, how bad is my hearing?”

This question is asked quite frequently in our sound booth. The severity of an individual’s hearing loss is not quantified on a scale of 1-to-10 or percentage.

In part because patients with the exact same hearing loss can experience quite a difference in their perceived difficulty! 💥

For example, an individual with very mild hearing loss might feel the effects of his/her hearing loss greatly when working full time in a busy, chaotic environment. Whereas someone with the same mild hearing loss might not think they have a problem because they live independently, turn up the tv volume (to how loud they need it), and blame others for having to repeat themselves...

Tip #2:

❌[Turn it off] Hearing damage occurs at loud volumes for long periods of time. You can use the 60/60 rule: listen at 60 percent volume for 60 minutes, then take a break for 30 minutes or more to allow your ears to rest and recover.
