I received a call from a frustrated woman this week. She has been a caretaker for her elderly father the past couple of years.
In the beginning…he welcomed the extra attention from his only daughter. 😊 but eventually began to resent her interference…much to the daughter’s dismay.
“Regardless of what I say or do, he will argue about it or simply refuse to do what I’m asking. The truth is that Dad’s becoming less able to care for himself and I’m so frustrated I don’t know where to go from here.” This is what I told her.
First Try This…
When is the last time YOU listened to what they were saying?
Try really listening closely to him the next time. Often at this stage of life, the older adult is more interested in their legacy… how they will be remembered etc. than what you would like them to do in the present.
Try letting him talk and ask questions like.. tell me again about how you met Mom..What did it feel like when you got your first car? These types of questions will validate what they are trying to achieve which is evaluating their lifetime of experiences.
With practice you might be surprised how this small tip will not only improve communication but hopefully enrich your relationship and help to ease the task of caring for your loved one.

Here Are 3 Tips When Your Siblings Won’t Help!

At least once a week when I’m consulting the adult child of an older adult, the siblings are mentioned as uncooperative or worse.

The brothers or sisters have no interest in ensuring their parents’ later years are comfortable. They certainly aren’t interested in making a plan!

Take a deep breath 😊 and know it’s ok. Everyone is not graced with your attitude of responsibility. Hard to believe? it’s true.

Chances are your sibling loves your parents as much as you do but they choose to show their love differently. Additionally, they probably have their own idea of where the boundaries lie.

My advice to you is..

1. Accept where they are. Now is not the time to be burning 🔥 bridges.

2. Seek professional guidance. It does not have to be as hard as you think.

3. Be sure to not get so involved in your caregiving that you lose sight of yourself and your own family. Calendar in quality time for you and your loved ones.

Message me if you think I could be of assistance to you and your family. I’ll always do my best to help 😊

Aging on Your Own? Here are 7 Action Steps!

1. Don’t Isolate - Try something new. Think of activities you always wanted to try but never took the plunge. Learn a language, take a class, join a walking club .. whatever may interest you. Visit your local senior center.. they always have something going on and often offer free meals.

2. Volunteer or even consider a part time job. There are more job opportunities than you may think

3. Downsize to a smaller and more manageable environment. Consider moving to an active senior community where different levels of care are available when you need them

4. Declutter - A fall can be devastating at any time but especially if you live alone without someone to get you help if you need it.

5. Security - As older adults, we can unknowingly make ourselves a target. Don’t open your door to anyone you don’t know. Walk as briskly and as confidently as possible from your car to your home so not too look weak and vulnerable. Keep your doors locked at all times and consider installing a Ring doorbell.

6. Get your legal documents in order now… Power of Attorney, Trust or Will, Advance Directive

7. If married or have a partner now, know your spouse’s passwords.. If your spouse handles all the bills, ask to be included in on the next billing cycle.
