1) Not getting the right support and education about managing type 2 diabetes
2) Just focusing on weight loss doesn’t equate to lower blood sugars and we’ll managed diabetes
3) Dieting instead of practicing consistency- add more high fiber foods and stop subtracting food groups
Do you agree with these?? What else are you struggling with??

So, let’s chat about the keto diet and type 2 diabetes. As a dietitian specializing in diabetes, here’s the scoop: While keto might seem like a quick fix, it can actually mess with your insulin levels in the long run because of its high fat content.
When you’re on the keto diet, you’re basically cutting out most carbs and loading up on fats. Initially, this can lower your blood sugar levels, which might seem like a win for diabetes management. However, over time, the high fat intake can mess with how your body responds to insulin. Your cells might become less sensitive to insulin, leading to insulin resistance. This can make it harder for your body to regulate blood sugar levels, which is the opposite of what you want when managing type 2 diabetes. So, while keto might offer short-term benefits, it’s important to consider the long-term impact on insulin sensitivity and overall health.
Plus the keto diet isn’t not very sustainable and can negatively impact other areas of health like heart disease.
Instead of going all-in on keto, I’m all about finding a balance that works for you—think nutrient-packed foods, watching portions, and getting your body moving. It’s all about making sustainable changes that stick and keep you feeling your best in the long haul!

Let’s make blood sugar balanced oatmeal!!
If you’ve been told you shouldn’t eat oatmeal because you have diabetes that’s not true!!!
Oatmeal is a good source of soluble fiber, which can help slow down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, thus preventing rapid spikes in blood sugar levels after a meal. This slower absorption also helps in providing sustained energy levels throughout the day, avoiding the energy crashes often associated with high-glycemic foods.
Moreover, oatmeal is versatile and can be customized with various toppings and additions, like peanut butter, chia seeds, and natural sweeteners, to enhance its flavor and nutritional profile without significantly impacting blood sugar levels.
Peanut butter for protein and healthy fats
Chia seeds for fiber and omegas
Maple syrup for a touch of sweetness that is low in the glycemic index
Oats for complex carb fiber
How do you like your oats?!

POV: When you gotta bite your tongue to keep a secret….
You can focus on other things than weight loss to lower your blood sugars!
I never make weight loss the focus with my clients because long term weight loss is rarely achieved- 95% of people will regain the weight they lost, sometimes even more. (PMID: 26180980)
This weight cycling can make the body more insulin resistant.
Yes- losing weight can help improve blood sugars but is it the weight or is it the behaviors like consistent exercise and balanced meals that are actually lowering blood sugars (and can also lead to weight loss)...
Plus weight cannot be controlled- we could all eat the same foods and exercise the same amount but would all still have different body sizes and shapes.
Instead of putting pressure on yourself to meet a weight goal and going on a restrictive diet, I urge you instead to focus on getting quality sleep, managing stress healthfully, exercising most days of the week, and balanced meals with a protein, veggie, and carb
Nutrition Counseling with me will help you:
🙌Build a healthier relationship with food and body while also improving blood sugars
🙌Feel confident in diabetes management including any medications, lifestyle factors, and meal planning
🙌Manage blood sugars without restrictive dieting
🙌Become more relaxed around food and empowered in your food choices.

Are you familiar with continuous glucose monitors (CGM)?
Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices help you manage diabetes without fewer fingersticks. A sensor just under your skin measures your glucose levels 24 hours a day. A transmitter sends results to a wearable device or cell phone.
From this collection we can see all sorts of data (like time in goal range 80-130), predicted A1c, and patterns of blood sugar readings through the day and night.
The overload of information is incredible but can be overwhelming so I always recommend working with a diabetes educator to help you understand the patterns and results.
The two main CGMs on the market are Dexcom and Freestyle Libre.
Both have pros and cons- if you’d be interested in a full breakdown let me know!
This is a video of me using a Dexcom G6 sample.
@dexcom has the G7 but I still have many clients using the G6 so I still wanted to share a little demo.
Are you using CGM? Let me know which one in the comments!

Salmon: Salmon is an excellent choice for individuals with type 2 diabetes due to its high content of omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and lower the risk of heart disease, which is common among people with diabetes. Additionally, salmon is a good source of lean protein, which helps to promote satiety and stabilize blood sugar levels.
Nuts: Nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, are packed with beneficial nutrients for individuals with type 2 diabetes. They are rich in healthy fats, fiber, and protein, all of which contribute to improved blood sugar control. Nuts have a low glycemic index, meaning they have a minimal impact on blood sugar levels. They also provide important minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that support overall health.
Veggies: Non-starchy vegetables like leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, and bell peppers are ideal for individuals with type 2 diabetes. These veggies are low in carbohydrates and calories while being rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Including a variety of colorful vegetables in your diet can help manage blood sugar levels, support weight management, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases associated with diabetes.
Seeds: Seeds, such as chia seeds, flaxseeds, and pumpkin seeds, offer numerous benefits for individuals with type 2 diabetes. They are high in fiber, healthy fats, and plant-based protein, which can help stabilize blood sugar levels and promote feelings of fullness. Seeds also contain essential minerals and antioxidants that support heart health and overall well-being.
Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt is a nutritious option for people with type 2 diabetes. It is lower in carbs and higher in protein compared to regular yogurt, which makes it a favorable choice for blood sugar control. The protein and fat in Greek yogurt also contribute to increased satiety. Additionally, Greek yogurt contains probiotics that support gut health, which
