I specifically advocate for the LifeVac, the device I used to save my son Mason's life. I'm a Pittsburgh area mom of two and here is my story...

On November 3, 2021, while cooking dinner, my son Mason began choking on a plastic baby doll bottle cap. It was clear so I couldn't see the obstruction. Now mind you, I had been CPR/1st aid certified several times, but I can tell yo

u when this happened my brain failed me. I proceeded to do back blows to no avail. I had just purchased a device called the LifeVac one month before so I grabbed Mason and ran to the hall closet. I grabbed the device, but before attempting to use it I tried back blows one more time without success. Time was running out and I knew I didn't have EMS on the way as my phone wasn't convenient, I was the only adult present and I was NOT going to let go of my son for even a second to go find it. I laid Mason down and used the device but nothing came out. By that point, I PANICKED thinking I was out of options and he was going to die. I needed help and I needed it NOW! So I grabbed Mason, grabbed the LifeVac and ran outside screaming for help. I was hoping someone would either 1. come to help me. Had I not bought it when I did, or not known about it, he would not be here. That is why I am strongly advocating for more awareness regarding choking. Prevention is key, but accidents happen. “Gagging is when a child opens their mouth and pushes their tongue outward to prevent an object from ‘going down the wrong tube,’ so to speak,” explains Dr. Donner. “They may turn bright red and make sputtering or retching noises. Gagging is the body's way of protecting the airway from choking. Let it happen naturally – there’s no need for intervention at this point.”

If the gagging or coughing noises stop, that’s a sign that the foreign object has become lodged in the child’s airway and that your little one is actively choking. “In this scenario, they are no longer able to pass any air in or out of the lungs, so they will often appear very panicked and unable to breathe,” says Dr. Donner.

Choking incidents aren't as uncommon as you might think – at least one child dies every five days from choking on food. That's why it’s a good idea to take a child-specific choking and CPR rescue maneuver class, so you’ll know how to respond in the event of an emergency, says Dr. Donner. Yesterday, I met many wonderful families. I had people happily run over to share they already have LifeVac at home, in their car, at their workplace, etc. They were excited to get some practice using the Choking Charlie mannequin and see how truly easy it is to use. Even their kids were eager to step up to the plate!

Being a fire safety event, naturally, I met a lot of 1st responders who found the LifeVac to be a "no-brainer." I spoke at length with one man who explained their current process and equipment, or lack-there-of, and agreed this is a very inexpensive device that would be helpful to have on hand; especially considering the EMS shortages all over the county.

Finally, I met a local State Representative and personally asked her to support HB2673. 🙌 Progress, no matter how small, is progress!

I had a very enthusiastic young man step up and volunteer for a good part of the Quaker Valley Fire Safety Fair. His mom purchased a device to protect their family and he wanted to ensure he was prepared. I'd say he is easily a pro now! I have no doubt he will be a hero someday.

While I spoke to parents, he took the time to demonstrate how to use the LifeVac and help other kids use the device. Thank you for all your help!

At the end, I had him pick the giveaway winner. 😊

Choking is a terrifying experience to go through. Watching your child's life hang in the balance.. The thoughts that go through your mind...

I'm so happy they had the LifeVac and their son is OK. I'm sorry they went through it in the 1st place.

Let me make something clear. There is still a trauma you go through even with the best possible outcome (successful rescue). As much as I love and advocate for LifeVac, PREVENTION IS IMPORTANT!

Quarter hot dogs and grapes. Cut and properly prepare your childrens food; especially if they are toddlers or babies. Don't let your guard down.
