Itching to see an acupuncturist again, last time I went was back when we were coming up on 40 weeks with Ziggy. There are specific points that may promote labor - which was my motivation at this visit 🥲 - they are typically avoided until you’re at or approaching your due date! Acupuncture during pregnancy is known for relieving symptoms of morning sickness, heartburn, depression, even easing lower back and pelvic pain. The points help soften uterine ligaments and bring blood flow to the pelvis. In late pregnancy, this encourages baby to descend and get in the perfect position for labor. ✨

Here’s a reminder to find the calm amongst the chaos (I promise it’s somewhere) and give yourself every ounce of grace.

¿Sabías que antes del 1600 las Mujeres Occidentales daban a luz en cuclillas, sentadas y de pie?
Esto cambió cuando el rey Luis XIV de Francia dispuso que para poder él presenciar el nacimiento de sus hijos, sus mujeres debían dar a luz acostadas.

Aunque esa postura hace más difícil y doloroso el parto, pronto se generalizó, y los médicos franceses tuvieron que inventar los fórceps para evitar algunas de sus consecuencias. En poco tiempo se multiplicaron los instrumentos obstétricos, y se llegó a creer que el parto siempre era una urgencia que exigía atención médica para que fuera sin complicaciones.

Cada vez se populariza más la idea de que la mujer debe guiarse por su propio instinto en lo que se refiere al parto. El número de futuras madres que optan por el parto natural -entendido como aquel parto en el que la intervención externa es la mínima posible- va en aumento.

El obstetra francés Michel Odent, uno de los defensores más notables del parto natural, afirma que la parturienta no debe atenerse a ninguna regla, sino obedecer a su instinto, que la hace experta en dar a luz. Odent daba a sus pacientes entera libertad para proceder como quisiesen, e incluso les permitía sentarse en una tina de agua tibia para aliviar el dolor de las contracciones uterinas. De ahí surgió la idea del parto en agua.

Los conocimientos actuales de fisiología han demostrado que el parto vertical -de pie o en cuclillas- permite que el nacimiento del bebé sea más rápido y menos traumático. Sin embargo no existe una postura universal para dar a luz. En las comunidades más primitivas, las parturientas primerizas se guían por el consejo de mujeres más experimentadas.

Time is a thief, everyone warns you about motherhood, parenthood - you blink and another year is gone. My Sylas is two in a couple days and while part of me feels like it’s been an eternity, meeting different versions of myself along the way, I know time is moving way too fast. Everyday I wish I could sniff, snuggle and embrace newborn Sylas one more time but gosh he is absolute magic. What a lucky mom I am to watch him grow another year older.

✨In case you missed it! ✨

After a lot of back and forth - my family and I are ready to announce we will be leaving Arizona! We are officially headed to Pittsburgh, PA this fall. I’m going to miss my sunshine but feeling confident in this new change and potential connections. I will be accepting clients there for due dates beginning in 2023 🥹💜 AND if you’re a birth worker in Pittsburgh I would love to connect. With all that being said, I do have a few spots open for September and early October due dates, I will be offering a relocation special here soon for Sierra Vista and Tucson parents-to-be. 🤍🤍🤍

A mother is born time and time again, with each birth comes a new version of herself. 🌞 This mama is a force to be reckoned with. I had the absolute honor of supporting her through an unmedicated vbac, watching her bear down on all fours (on the hospital bed 🤭) and bring her baby girl into the world.

The aim of this retrospective population-based cohort study was to determine whether the mode of delivery and maternal and neonatal outcomes differ between planned home VBAC (HBAC) and planned hospital VBAC.

No difference was found in out comes, but homebirth VBACs had a 39% higher chance of birthing vaginally!

This is exciting news, but it comes with one caveat - “within an integrated health system”.

And here in lies the problem - not midwives, not vbac, not homebirth, but the dominate health system that continues to marginalize, investigate, ostracize, delegitimize, criminalize, and prosecute anyone not using health care to make money. A truly integrated health system is not possible when profit is more important than people.

The level of dysfunction and magnitude of the changes needed overwhelm all of us- midwives and parents alike. One way forward is to keep using the dominate system’s methods to validate the midwifery model of care. Thank you and colleagues for this beautifully designed study! 🙏❤️‍🩹

This is a special keepsake that I make for women who experience an early miscarriage. I can do this keepsake for miscarriages between 6-20 weeks gestation. At 20 weeks, baby will be able to be taken to a funeral home for a traditional cremation.
