Episode 3 of Real Talk with DONs @ 2 PM

If you’re a new Director of Nursing, this conversation is for you.

Too many DONs step into leadership with clinical skill, heart, and good intentions, but without the mentorship, mindset, and support they actually need to succeed. In this episode, I’m talking about the truth of being a new DON, the pressure, the self-doubt, the overwhelm, and why asking for help is not a weakness. It’s wisdom.

I share what changed my own journey over the last 19 years and why mentorship is one of the strongest decisions a new DON can make.

Watch the full episode on YouTube and let me know which part spoke to you most.

What if your first year as a Director of Nursing didn’t feel like survival mode?

Imagine walking into work without already feeling behind.
Imagine your team trusting your leadership.
Imagine leaving the building and actually being present with your family at home.

That kind of leadership doesn’t happen by accident.
It takes boundaries, delegation, and systems that protect your peace while strengthening your role.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is this:
Work-life harmony must be built on purpose.

When the right structures are in place, leadership becomes more sustainable, your confidence grows, and you stop operating from constant exhaustion.

Your first year as a DON does not have to break you.
With mentorship and guidance, it can become the foundation for the leader you were called to be.

That’s exactly why the DON Success Network exists.

One of the biggest regulatory mistakes I made early in my career as a Director of Nursing taught me a lesson I never forgot.

I underestimated how one small regulatory detail could impact the entire nursing department.

Surveyors don’t just look at what happened.

They look at how your systems are connected.

One of the biggest tips I give new DONs when I mentor them is this:

Don’t just memorize regulations.
Understand the intent behind them.

When you understand why a regulation exists:

✔ Your decisions become clearer
✔ Your systems become stronger
✔ Your team understands the bigger picture

Over my 19 years as a DON, that shift changed everything.

Instead of reacting to survey anxiety, I started building systems that protected the team and the residents.

If regulatory pressure is one of your biggest stresses right now as a new DON, know this:

Confidence grows with the right mentorship and guidance.

That’s exactly why I’m hosting a free masterclass for Directors of Nursing.

One leadership habit that can help protect your license? Build a daily leadership rhythm.

One of the biggest fears new Directors of Nursing carry is this:
What if I miss something important?

When you’re juggling staffing, family concerns, team leadership, and regulations, that fear is real.

That’s why one practical habit I teach is this:
Create 3 intentional touch points in your day:

✨ Staffing awareness
✨ Regulatory risk review
✨ Team connection

Even 10 focused minutes in each area can create more consistency, confidence, and clarity.

In my 19 years as a DON, the leaders who thrive are not always the ones working the longest hours. They’re the ones who build repeatable leadership systems.

That’s the kind of structure, mentorship, and guidance we focus on inside our program.

Your role gets lighter when your leadership gets stronger.

Every week, as a Director of Nursing tells a story.

Some weeks reveal your wins.
Some weeks expose the pressure.
Some weeks remind you exactly where you need support.

The question is not just how last week went. The real question is whether you have the guidance, strategy, and mentorship to move forward stronger this week.

Inside the DON Success Network, Directors of Nursing get real support for real leadership challenges, so you are not left figuring it all out on your own.

You were never meant to carry this role alone.

If staffing feels like your entire job, this is for you.

If you’re a new Director of Nursing, let me guess: your day feels like it revolves around staffing.

Call-offs.
Last-minute coverage.
Trying to hold the schedule together.
Trying to keep morale up while everyone, including you, is running on empty.

And by the time staffing is handled, the rest of your leadership work is already behind, and you are mentally and physically drained.

One of the biggest lessons I learned in my early years as a DON is this:

Staffing problems are rarely solved by the schedule alone. They are often solved in the culture.

When your team feels supported, heard, and engaged, staffing begins to stabilize in a deeper and more sustainable way.

After 19 years in this role, I have learned that staffing stability starts with leadership rhythm, clear expectations, and consistent team engagement. When those pieces are in place, the chaos begins to slow down, and you can finally breathe again.

If you are in your first year as a Director of Nursing and staffing feels overwhelming, take heart. You are not alone in that learning curve.

Support matters. Strategy matters. Mentorship matters.

That is why spaces like the DON Success Network and one-on-one mentorship exist, so new leaders like you can gain the support and real-world guidance many of us had to learn the hard way.
