Taking a stand against obesity stigma!

For some people living with obesity, the fear of being judged may stop them from seeking care.

In fact, in one survey, 66% of participants who reported a history of weight stigma experienced it from doctors. This needs to change.💯

I’m proud to share the Inclusive Obesity Care Initiative, a project I believe so much in and thrilled to have collaborated with those seen here in these pictures, including the amazing
serving as a most amazing spokesperson and advocate!

This initiative offers everyone a chance to support people living with obesity to find care that's attentive, respectful, and personalized to their weight and health goals.

Keep an eye out for the symbol that signifies this inclusive care, at the end of the deck. Also, check out some fun snaps on the set ✨

In healthcare, we HAVE to do better and we need to reverse the stigma that is in the medical field.

My favorite plant-based high fiber & high protein ways to start the day!

1 - Overnight Oats
I add cinnamon, vanilla, chia seeds, and occasionally cacao powder (when I'm feeling feisty)
I pair it with 1/4 walnuts and 1 cup berries

2 - Berry Chia Seed Pudding
Seriously, check out 's recipe - you're welcome
I put it on top of unsweetened cashew milk yogurt and add fresh berries and walnuts

3 - Muesli
My favorite kind is the brand
I add a tablespoon of chia seeds and let it steep for at least 5 minutes. Also like to have berries with it (pomegranate seeds are great as well!).

4 - Protein Shake
I use a high protein plant-milk like unsweetened soy or unsweetened oat with pea protein and add frozen fruit, a date, a cup of spinach, a tablespoon of ground flax, and a scoop of plant-protein powder
Check out 's recommendations on plant-based protein powders!

5 - Beans and Toas
OK- the first time I heard this was a breakfast item was from and I quickly learned it's a British thing
And it is BRILLIANT!
I love the recipe from - you have to try it!!
I put it on top of ezekial bread and put arugula as the base - sooooo yum
I make this on the weekends when I have more time

6 - Tofu Scramble
Speaking of when I have more time - that is when I also make my tofu scrambles
I like to add pre-chopped veggies, a can of washed beans, taco seasoning (homemade is best), unsweetened enchilada sauce or salsa
Serve with your favorite greens and it pairs so well with whole wheat lavash bread!

National Latina/o Physician Day is today, October 1!

I am so proud to make up part of the Latina/o physician workforce. 🙌🏼

I am first generation born here in the U.S. of Peruvian parents and was raised in a bilingual household 🇵🇪. I was the first in my family to pursue medicine 👩🏽‍⚕️.

I hope that by sharing my story and experiences, I can inspire more Latina/os to join this amazing profession! 💯

Latina/o physicians only make up 6% of the entire physician workforce here in the United States, yet 20% of the U.S. population identify as Latino/a.

Increasing diversity in the medical field certainly enriches appreciation of each other (all communities!) and also helps advocate for individuals whose voices historically may have not been heard. 🎤

Vamos!!

Based on current evidence there is not enough information related to early screening or detection for type 2 diabetes to determine benefit or harms of screening.

Therefore, use of clinical judgment is recommended.

Some important risk factors to keep in mind:
-Obesity
-Racial/Ethnic heritage, particularly Latinx, African American, and Native American backgrounds

Symptoms of diabetes can include
-Significant thirst
-Frequent urination (including frequent bedwetting at night)
-Significant fatigue

Young people with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk
-high blood pressure
-high cholesterol levels
-fatty liver disease

There are different blood tests to screen for diabetes, which include:
-Hemoglobin A1C
-Fasting blood sugar
-Oral glucose tolerance test

If you have questions about whether screening for type 2 diabetes is appropriate for a child you know, please discuss this with the child's pediatrician.

What if your doctor prepared for your medical visit like this?

Instead of just prepping charts on the computer.... (next pic) 👉👉👉

This is real.

I use my IN OFFICE teaching kitchen with my patients to discuss the power of plant-based nutrition as an integral part of their comprehensive metabolic health.

Sometimes trying to incorporate more plants into your nutrition can be overwhelming.

Maybe you're curious but lack the comfort or confidence in trying new recipes.

That is the purpose of the teaching kitchen and culinary medicine - teaching the importance of healthy food, discussing how it helps health and prevent disease, and building the confidence you need to take the skills you learn here and apply it at home.

This is what comprehensive care looks like.

Have you ever felt like you've had a low blood sugar, but it's not?

That is known as perceived hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

This usually happens when someone has had high blood sugars for sometime and the body has gotten used to these high blood sugars. The body starts to think that those high numbers are it's 'normal'.

SO if the person then changes their lifestyle habits or starts new medicines and the numbers come down in the normal range, the body *thinks* it is low, when it is not!

What to do?
1) Check a blood sugar - if it's normal, sit down and let it be! Your body needs to get used to the normal blood sugar
2) If you still feel crummy after 15 minutes, check the blood sugar again to make sure it is not rapidly falling. If it goes below 70mg/dL, then at that time you would treat it.

After several days of normal blood sugars, you won't have those symptoms anymore and the body will understand that it's new normal is where your goal should be!
