AT WHAT POINT SHOULD A PATIENT SEEK HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY?

Patients who have severe diabetic foot ulcers, adverse effects of radiation therapy, cancer survivors struggling with an open wound that won’t heal, or problems caused by radiation treatment, such as with their jaw, bladder, or re**al bleeding, all respond beautifully to hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Any patient experiencing these symptoms should ask their doctor about receiving HBO for their condition.

Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy help with burns?

In the United States, thermal burns are common, and about 2 million individuals are injured each year. About 155 out of every million of these people need to go to the hospital, and 6500 of them die. Burns are complex and changing injuries that cause platelets and white blood cells to become very active, the microvasculature to be destroyed by coagulation or thrombosis, and edema to build up. Burns must be treated by a doctor, especially if they are of the second degree or worse and cover a large area of the body. Thermal burns are hard to treat for many reasons, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) may be used as part of the treatment plan to speed up healing and improve results.

What are the risks associated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

In general, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a risk-free procedure. Complications are uncommon. However, this treatment is not without risk.

Possible dangers include:

1. Air pressure changes cause middle ear injuries such as fluid leakage and eardrum rupture.
2. Temporary myopia from lens modifications
3. Pressure change-caused lung collapse (barotrauma)
4. Lowered blood sugar in people who have diabetes treated with insulin
5. Oxygen toxicity in the central nervous system causes seizures.
6. Due to the oxygen-rich treatment chamber, fire can occur.

Get in touch with us today to set up a consultation and learn more about the potential risks involved with the treatment and how they can be avoided at https://serenagroupclinic.com/request-a-consultation/.

Which complications of diabetes can be treated with hyperbaric oxygen?

Diabetes patients often suffer vascular complications. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been suggested as a way to treat problems with the blood vessels that are caused by an oxygen imbalance in the plasma. Inhaling 100% oxygen at a pressure between 1.6 and 2.8 atmospheres is what hyperbaric oxygen therapy is. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy makes oxygen more soluble in the blood, which helps oxygen get to faraway tissues and keeps ischemic tissues from dying from atherosclerosis. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy changes the amount and type of fatty acids in the blood and improves membrane signaling, which is blocked by high blood sugar and low oxygen. HBOT changes molecules that are involved in making nitric oxide. This makes diabetic patients feel less pain and helps new blood vessels grow.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used to treat cerebral ischemia, peripheral artery disease, gangrenous lesions (diabetic foot), ischemia and reperfusion injury, central retinal artery obstruction, and other vascular problems.

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy good for diabetes?

A study done in 2018 found that HBOT helped treat 74.2% of diabetic foot ulcers. When compared to other treatments, using HBOT made the foot ulcer heal much faster and better. When a wound heals on its own, the body uses oxygen to speed up the process and make new tissue grow. HBOT helps promote the growth of new blood vessels around the wound, which bring more oxygen to the area. With more oxygen and other healing nutrients coming in, new, healthy tissue can grow.
