The little girl I used to be didn’t have all the answers.

She just had belief and confidence.

Belief that her life could be bigger than what she saw.
Belief that her voice mattered and the confidence to know that she belonged no matter the obstacles in her way.

ā€˜No’ was never an option because her goals were a critical mission for those that came after her, her future family, and the little girls watching that looked like her.

And now… I get to live the life she once dreamed about 🄺

Not perfectly. Not easily.
But purposefully.

A reminder to keep dreaming BIG - Take up space - Use your voice to elevate the next generation of women who dream BIG šŸ’

From leading here… to being invited back to teach here.

That’s not lost on me.

Returning to University of Tennessee Health Science Center reminded me just how foundational that season was, building a Laryngology division from scratch, learning leadership in real time, and caring for a community I still miss deeply.

This trip wasn’t just about Grand Rounds (though what an honor ✨), it was about showing my kids where it all started. Their old school, our neighborhood, the parks, the zoo… and watching them light up with memories.

And somehow, even from afar, the mentorship continues.

I don’t take any of this lightly. The work. The people. The journey. And being able to do it all with my family.

There’s something special about watching purpose meet perseverance. ✨

These incredible women held tight to their why, through every long night, every doubt, every obstacle and today, they matched.

I am beaming with pride. Not just for where you are, but for who you’ve become in the process. Never forget your superpower: perseverance. And never forget that there are young women watching you, learning from you, and dreaming because of you. Pay it forward. Always.

And to our newest ✨ University of Pittsburgh Department of Otolaryngology match—what an amazing crew. We are beyond excited to work with you, teach you, and grow alongside you. Welcome to a program where the possibilities are truly endless.

To all of you, future leaders in otolaryngology and anesthesia, I cannot wait to see how you shape these fields.

Heyyyy Med Students!!!!!!! You’ve worked this hard! Lament for a little but pick yourself up fast because the buck doesn’t stop here!

There’s lots of evidence to show that having a mentor increases your chances of matching into your specialty of choice.

Find a mentor, get on a research project, particularly if you are applying to a competitive specialty or alternatively, scramble into a preliminary intern year and wow their socks off! Just don’t give up!

Keep your eye on the prize, we are rooting for you!

The lemonade pitcher may have been a dead giveaway away that they wouldn’t have any idea, but thank goodness will be able to fill in this knowledge gap 🤣 šŸ‘ŠšŸ¾

When the appointment somehow turns into a hair consultation. šŸ˜‚

Different can be intimidating — but it can also be a beautiful opener. Some of my best conversations started with a question about this crown. šŸ‘‘

Don’t be afraid to ask. Don’t be afraid to be curious. Our differences don’t divide us — they connect us.
And yes, the hair defies gravity. That’s one of my superpowers. ✨

What’s your favorite patient hair comment? šŸ‘‡šŸ¾
