January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, making this a good time to remind women to schedule their annual exams with their GYN physician. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer each year, yet cervical cancer is often preventable through routine screenings (PAP & HPV tests). In most cases, cervical cancer can be prevented through early detection and treatment of abnormal cell changes that occur in the cervix years before cervical cancer develops.

Heritage Valley Generations OB/GYN is accepting new patients. Please visit https://bit.ly/4qE9MaT for practice information.

During this Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, I am committed both to promoting awareness of screening and treatment of this disease and that we have a highly effective way to prevent or even eliminate cervical cancer with the HPV vaccine. Please speak with your doctor about being screened for cervical cancer and how you can prevent this disease in your children.

The U.S. is experiencing its worst resurgence of measles in more than three decades, and is at risk of losing its measles elimination status in January.

A team at the Yale School of Public Health has been closely tracking cases in the Americas since early 2025, issuing weekly reports of new cases via its virtual medical operation centers special report.

According to the Yale report:

Total U.S. cases: 2,024
Past-week new cases: 38

The U.S. passed 2,000 measles cases this week, ending the year with a record number of cases since measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.

Vaccine news

Vaccines save lives. Millions of Pennsylvanians rightly expect that they will be able to receive immunizations through their local pharmacists and pharmacies. That is unfortunately under threat due to dangerous federal policies. Yesterday, the State House passed on a bipartisan basis my legislation with Rep. Tarik Khan, Rep. Bridget M Kosierowski, and Rep. Jennifer O'Mara to ensure that all Pennsylvanians can continue to receive vaccine through their pharmacies. The legislation now goes to the State Senate for consideration.
