Dr. John Avolio is excited to help serve patients at Pittsburgh Dental Sleep Medicine in the McMurray, PA office.

Dr. Avolio earned his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Following graduation, he completed a General Practice Residency at St. Elizabeth’s Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio. He remained in Youngstown after his residency, working in public health dentistry before moving to Virginia Beach in 2010, where he practiced as an associate in general dentistry. After 4 years in Virginia Beach, Dr. Avolio and his wife moved back to Pittsburgh to be closer to family. He has since owned and operated a successful private general dental practice in Zelienople, PA.

In 2017, Dr. Avolio began his journey into dental sleep medicine after attending continuing education courses. He quickly discovered a passion for helping patients struggling with CPAP therapy and pursued advanced training in the field. In 2020, Dr. Avolio completed the 3-part Mastery series and achieved the status of Diplomate and is board-certified in dental sleep medicine. These distinctions represent the highest education and achievements for dentists that help treat obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing.

Dr. Avolio values collaboration and works closely with physicians to help manage patients with obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing. He takes great pride in helping patients realize that a restful night’s sleep and a better quality of life are within reach.

Outside the office, Dr. Avolio and his wife share their home with 2 English Pointers. He enjoys upland bird hunting with his dogs, hiking, cycling, and kayaking. A lifelong Pittsburgh sports fan, he proudly bleeds black and gold. He and his wife are also foodies, who love experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen or discovering new restaurants together.

We are proud to share a post from earlier this month when Drs. Michelle Cantwell and Becky Fox (from our Harrisburg location at PA Dental Sleep Medicine) presented at the Walter Reed Medical Center on oral appliance therapy as a treatment for OSA in the military. Over 40 providers from all 3 branches of the military heard some valuable insights on integrating sleep apnea screening and treatment into their work as military dentists.

In recognition of service, federal service employees can join the AADSM for $60 and receive 75% off all AADSM educational courses. We thank our Veterans for their service!

On this day, all of our offices proudly recognize Patriot Day.

"Today, we honor the brave Americans who met the terror of September 11 with extraordinary acts of courage and sacrifice. In our darkest hour — when terrorists believed they could bring our country to its knees — those Americans proved that our Nation’s unbreakable spirit would prevail."
--President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.
